Ged, who is constantly intelligent, inquisitive, and proud, presses his teacher, asking when they would start studying actual magic. When will we be able to transform rocks into true diamonds? The Master Changer responds while clutching a pebble:
“You must alter this rock’s true name in order to transform it into a diamond. And to influence the world in that way, my son, even a little bit of it… Until you are certain of the positive and bad consequences of your actions, you must not alter a single pebble, particle of sand, or other object. Equilibrium, or balance, exists throughout the world. The world’s equilibrium can be upset by a wizard’s use of the Changing and Summoning powers. That power is hazardous… It must satisfy needs and follow knowledge. A candle’s light creates a shadow…
A little while after this interaction, Ged challenges a competitor student, someone he has grown to despise, to a show of magical skill because of his talent and pride. Ged boasts that he can conjure the ghost of a legendary figure from long ago, and in the dead of night, he succeeds. As the world is split in two by blinding light, Ged’s students watch in horror.
But casting a shadow results from lighting a candle. Ged’s own Shadow sprang from the dazzling hole between the realms. His arrogance, intoxication with his own brilliance, and rage erupt with bared claws and maul him. Ged just about makes it out alive.
From that point on, Ged and his Shadow pursue each other in an effort to control the other until a pivotal showdown in the book’s final pages.
The shadows generated by the brightest flames are the darkest. Similar to Ged’s hubris and pride, these shadows are most frequently found in the twelfth house, where they remain hidden until they have developed into an ominous cloud that hangs over our deeds.
