New and full moon rituals are becoming increasingly popular. A ritual can help you stay grounded in the midst of chaos during an eclipse, particularly if you set dedicated aims.
Because solar eclipses occur on new moons, a ritual or intention-setting session could focus on assisting you in making a fresh start. Finding the guts to start over, accepting change, taking a chance (even if it scares you), putting yourself out there, and making a major reveal/coming out of the metaphorical closet are all possible themes.
Full moons are times of endings, closures, manifestations, and transitions, hence lunar eclipses occur at such times. A significant breakthrough, pushing past obstacles and restrictions, letting go of a terrible circumstance for good, breaking away from an addictive pattern, healing, or releasing may be the focus of lunar eclipse ceremonies.
Depending on which sign the eclipse occurs in astrologically, you might choose to perform a zodiac-specific ritual. Follow our advice for rituals and gatherings around the new and full moons. To intensify your objectives, you might do a ceremony by yourself or with friends.

What should I do if a solar eclipse occurs?
Except during the brief total phase (“totality”) of a total solar eclipse, when the Moon completely conceals the Sun’s brilliant face, which occurs only within the limited path of totality, looking straight at the Sun is dangerous. See Xavier Jubier’s Google Map to see if your home or any other exact place is inside the roughly 115-mile-wide path of the April 8, 2024, North American total solar eclipse, which allows you to zoom in to street level.
There is no period when it is safe to gaze directly at the Sun during a partial or annular (ring) solar eclipse, such as the one in the Americas on October 14, 2023, without employing a special-purpose solar filter that meets the transmission standards of the ISO 12312-2 international standard.
Homemade filters or ordinary sunglasses, even very dark ones, are not safe for looking at the Sun; they transmit thousands of times too much light. See our Reputable Vendors of Solar Filters & Viewers page for a list of suppliers.
Instructions for the Safe Use of Solar Filters/Viewers
- Before using your solar filter, make sure it’s not scratched, pierced, torn, or otherwise damaged. Read and follow any instructions printed on the filter or included with it.
- When utilizing solar filters, always keep an eye on your kids.
- Keep your glasses on if you regularly wear them. Cover them with eclipse glasses or hold your handheld viewer in front of them.
- Before looking up at the brilliant Sun, stand motionless and protect your eyes with your eclipse glasses or solar viewer. Turn away and remove your filter after looking at the Sun; do not remove it while looking at the Sun.
- Do not gaze at the Sun with an unfiltered camera, telescope, binoculars, or other optical instrument while it is uneclipsed, partially eclipsed, or annularly eclipsed.
- Similarly, while wearing your eclipse glasses or handheld solar viewer, do not stare at the Sun through a camera, telescope, binoculars, or any other optical device.
- The concentrated sun rays could damage the filter and cause serious injury to your eye(s).
- Before utilizing a sun filter with a camera, telescope, binoculars, or any other optical instrument, seek professional counsel from an astronomer; solar filters must be affixed to the front of any telescope, binoculars, camera lens, or other optics.
- Remove your solar filter only when the Moon completely covers the Sun’s brilliant face and it becomes quite dark if you are inside the path of totality on April 8, 2024. After totality, replace your solar viewer and look at the remaining partial phases as soon as the bright Sun reappears. This only applies to seeing without the use of optical aids (other than ordinary eyeglasses). When seeing or picturing the Sun through camera lenses, binoculars, or telescopes, different regulations apply; consult an expert astronomer before utilizing any sort of magnifying optics with a solar filter.
- To see the Sun directly beyond the path of totality and during a partial or annular solar eclipse, you must always use a suitable sun filter.
Note: If your eclipse glasses or viewers meet the ISO 12312-2 safety standard’s transmission standards, you may look at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed Sun through them for as long as you choose. You can also reuse the filters indefinitely providing they aren’t scratched, pierced, torn, or otherwise damaged. Warnings are put on some glasses/viewers, advising that you should not stare through them for more than 3 minutes at a time and that they should be discarded if they are older than 3 years. Such warnings are obsolete and do not apply to eclipse viewers built after 2015, which are in excellent condition and comply with the ISO 12312-2 standard published that year. See our Reputable Vendors of Solar Filters & Viewers page to make sure you acquire (or got) your eclipse glasses/viewers from a seller of ISO-compliant items.
What If You Don’t Have a Safe Solar Filter/Viewer?
Indirect pinhole projection is an alternative approach for viewing the partially obscured Sun safely. Make a waffle pattern by crossing the outstretched, slightly open fingers of one hand over the outstretched, slightly open fingers of the other. Look at your hands’ shadow on the ground with your back to the Sun. The microscopic spaces between your fingers will project a grid of small images on the ground, portraying the Sun as a crescent during partial solar eclipses or as a ring during annular eclipses. During a partial or annular eclipse, simply gaze at the shadow of a leafy tree; the ground will be mottled with crescent or ring-shaped Suns projected by the tiny crevices between the leaves.
One of nature’s most spectacular displays is a solar eclipse. You can safely enjoy the view and be rewarded with memories that will last a lifetime if you follow these easy instructions.

1. Sunglasses should never be used in place of solar viewing or eclipse glasses since they are not safe. 2.Do not use your camera to take pictures of the eclipse. If you do not use the proper glasses, the concentrated rays of the Sun may cause damage to your eyes.

What is the name of the God of Eclipse?
An eclipse in Norse mythology involves the two gods Sol, goddess of the sun, and Mani, god of the moon. These two are brother and sister, and they are in charge of flying around the sky in their horse-drawn chariots every day and night. For good cause, the horses of these chariots, or at least Sol’s, are named rvakr (“Early Riser”) and Alsvir (“Swift”). Sol and Mani are continually pursued by Skoll and Hati, the ‘One Who Mocks’ and the ‘One Who Hates,’ respectively. When they capture Sol and Mani, which is announced by an eclipse, it is interpreted as an omen that Ragnarok, the Norse mythology’s end of the world, is approaching.
Other ancient cultures, including the Chinese, Korean, Hindu, and Egyptian, relate an eclipse with the sun being swallowed by a being and then restored after being chased away, fought against, and other ways. In Inuit mythology, Anningan, the moon deity, and Malina, the sun goddess, are brother and sister who had a tumultuous relationship.
Malina rushed off after a particularly violent debate, and Anningan after her. He forgets to eat since he is so keen on capturing his sister (whether to apologize or continue the quarrel) that he grows increasingly thin until he has drop down to Earth to eat and replenish his vigor before continuing his pursuit. An eclipse occurs when Anningan finally catches up to his sister, until Malina flees again.
An eclipse of the sun was thought to be a peri’s joke by ancient Persians. The peri were winged, fairy-like spirits with a wide range of personalities, ranging from benevolent and helpful to mischievous and even malicious. When an eclipse occurred, it was thought to be a purposeful covering, blotting out, or darkening of the sun for entertainment purposes.
In the present period, a solar eclipse is a well-understood phenomena, yet in ancient times, it was a random and even ominous event for many tribes around the planet. The eclipse mythology was a method for people to make sense of what was going on. If they had eclipse glasses like we have now, they could have thought it was as spectacular as we do in the twenty-first century!
