A little philosophy goes a long way
The word “matter of ultimate concern” is used by German theologian and philosopher Paul Tillich to define the component or factors in our daily experience that propel us onward and give structure, significance, and depth to our understanding of ourselves and our world. This category, according to Tillich, includes the content of one’s religious beliefs. It’s worth noting that the term “concern” here doesn’t indicate “trouble,” but rather “subject for discussion,” “issue,” or “interest.”
We can, however, broaden it to include anything in our lives provides us with a sense of narrative consistency. What are the things that are most essential to us? What are the tales, experiences, and life paths that have the most meaning for us? What is our relationship with those stories, events, and ways of life?
Tillich’s term of “ultimate concern” is an excellent place to start when considering the ninth house, because the ninth house has long been associated with religion, spirituality, illumination, dreams, and wisdom in Western astrology (with some support from the Jyotish tradition as well).

Where the ninth house gets its meanings

It’s not a house that has big influence in the world on its own, but rather its issues underlie how we choose to impact the world and what we prioritize as a result of our “ultimate concern.
Concerns about Ultimate Concerns
It’s also worth noting that the character and condition of the planet governing the ninth house, as well as planets positioned there, results in scenarios where concerns of illumination are complicated, as we’ll see later. How to interpret the ninth house in astrology
When working with the ninth house, we ask ourselves the following questions:

Another example: let’s say we have another person with Cancer as their tenth house cusp. The Moon is conjoined the South Node with Saturn in Aries, and it’s a day chart; the Sun is in Leo in the 10th house, so the Moon is losing light, and the Moon is conjoined the South Node with Saturn in Aries. Assume that the Moon is surrounded by Mars in front of it and Saturn behind it.
This is a difficult example, so let’s break it down step by step: Because the Moon is the 9th ruler, this person’s illumination/religious process has already fulfilled a deep emotional security phase. They feel a profound feeling of obligation and physical work on behalf of their tradition when the Moon is in the 6th (think inexhaustible church ladies).
This could also be an indication of someone who finds physical spiritual manifestations like yoga, fasting, or martial arts (Aries!) to be important in their spiritual journey. Deep challenges develop in the expression of this process as a result of their local community or domineering, doctrinaire parents due to the Moon’s afflicted by Saturn (the 3rd and 4th ruler).
The very malefic process of Fallen Mars in the 9th causes people to gravitate toward breaking religious taboos. Things aren’t looking good for this person’s efforts to be a “good Christian kid,” and we may speculate that it stems from a desire to understand why religious taboos exist.
Because the Moon applies to Mars with receptivity, this person’s questioning and testing of religious expectations really helps them find a sense of purpose, significance, and depth, as Mars is obligated to assist the Moon in achieving its goals.
