What Is A Progressed Astrology Chart

“A graph that shows how things have progressed.

shows you what’s going on in terms of your personal development; the internal changes you’re going through.”

In astrology, what does progressed mean?

Horoscopic astrology uses astrological progressions as one of the primary tools for predicting future trends and events (the other means is transits, which are simply the ongoing movements of the planets across the sky). Astrological progression, as the name implies, is a means of advancing the Horoscope ahead from the time of the subject’s birth or commencement into the future, and is most commonly used for a person’s birth or natal chart.

Secondary progression, also known as ‘a-day-for-a-year’ progression, and Solar arc direction, often known as ‘a-degree-for-a-year’ progression, are the two basic types of progression. The planets, Ascendant, and Midheaven are all shown to have moved positions in the progressed chart in both systems, and these shifts are noted. Changes in zodiac signs and houses, as well as the angles or aspects formed by the progressed planets with the original natal chart, are given special emphasis.

When a progressive chart is updated, how often does it change?

A advanced chart can be read on its own, although it is frequently compared to the natal chart. Transits to advanced planets should also be taken into account.

The secondary progressed Moon is an important part of the advanced chart. This is the quickest moving body in the advanced chart, changing signs every two and a half years, which corresponds to the Moon changing signs every two and a half days in the sky.

The advanced Moon is a powerful tool for improving prediction accuracy. Larger progressed aspects and transits will assist narrow down a time-sensitive period highlighted by an important progressed Moon aspect.

Is there a distinction between a transit and a progression?

Transits are the planets in a chart at a specific point in time. The planets interact with each other and link to the birth chart using the aspects discussed earlier as they move across the zodiac. Progression charts are another popular type of chart.

What does it mean to have an advanced Ascendant?

So, when looking at an advanced chart, which planets and angles should we pay attention to?

The simple answer is that the fast-moving planets, such as the Sun and Moon, and to a lesser extent Mercury, Venus, and Mars, will undergo significant movement throughout our lifetime. Examining your Ascendent as it has progressed might also be quite beneficial.

Progressed SunEvolved Journey & Focus

Because the Sun moves roughly 1 degree every year during your life, it could take up to 30 years for your advanced chart to change signs, depending on the degree at birth.

During your lifetime, it will most likely only affect 2-3 houses and signage (at the most 4).

The advanced sun represents your changing identity, or how you mature, change, and grow as a person.

In his book The Changing Sky, Steven Forrest describes it as follows:

” A slow, piercing laser of self-awareness illuminates that part of the birthchart, increasing it and requiring that it evolve quickly to meet the needs of the matured personality.”

The advanced sun does not replace your natal sun’s voyage, but it does give an additional layer to your identity that lasts for about 30 years.

When your Progressed Sun shifts signs or houses, it will most likely be a pivotal time for personal growth and expression.

The Progressed MoonEvolved Emotional Needs

As previously indicated, the progressed moon moves 12-14 degrees per day, therefore it would move 12-14 degrees from its natal position for each year of our existence in a progressed chart.

This means it switches signs and residences every 2-3 years, making it an ideal moment to tune in to, harness, and utilise its energy.

As a result, the progressed Moon is my favorite progressed location to work with because it doesn’t take long to move into another house or sign, and the influence on your life is immediate and emotional.

The advanced moon does not take the place of your natal moon’s demands, but it does add a short-term layer to your emotional needs that lasts for about 2-3 years.

It begins a new emotional cycle every 28-29 years when it conjuncts your natal moon, which is known as the advanced new moon.

The Progressed AscendantEvolved Identity

During your lifetime, your progressive ascendant will most likely only pass through 3-4 houses (1st, 2nd, 3rd, and potentially 4th) and signs.

It is more important to look at the zodiac sign it is in because it will contact the same 3-4 houses for everyone.

The advanced Ascendant does not replace how you appear to others; rather, it adds another layer to how others perceive you and shows your changing style.

The year in which your progressive ascendant switches signs signifies substantial changes in your identity and how others perceive you.

What is the position of your advanced Moon?

Your advanced moon tells us about your evolving emotional demands and can be extremely useful in making year-end plans. You may read my earlier blog post describing progressions here.

Your matured emotional demands are represented by your progressed moon. The advanced moon does not take the place of your natal moon’s demands, but it does add a short-term layer to your emotional needs that lasts for about 2-3 years.

How long does ascendancy take to progress?

It’s worth noting that, in addition to the three strategies used in the examples above, there are others that result in far larger disparities.

The advanced Ascendant ranges from 18 to 21 degrees Taurus in this chart. The change of sign and its aspects to planets might vary not only by months, but often by years, because this element evolves so slowly from year to year. In other words, different astrologers could state, for example, that the advanced Ascendant enters Gemini in November 2025 (Solar Arc MC), August 2026 (Naibod), or February 2028 (R.A.M.S. MC) depending on the method utilized, and each of them would be technically true!

Astrologers typically test out various techniques to find the one that works best for them. It’s best to keep an open mind when learning astrology; with time, you may decide on a strategy or choose to focus less on the houses and more on the advanced planets’ aspects to the planets and points in the progressed and natal charts.

What is the difference between a secondary progressed chart and a primary progressed chart?

Astrologers “advance a chart” in a variety of methods. “Secondary Progressions” is one of the most common approaches. Astrologers use this concept to compare one day after birth to one year of life (the day-for-a-year method). Secondary progressions provide insight into how our distinct personalities evolve throughout time.

Another technique to advance a chart is to use solar arc directions, which is also a very useful tool. The chart is advanced using this method by calculating the “arc” (distance in degrees) between the progressed Sun and the natal Sun and adding this distance to the rest of the planets and points. Because the Sun moves at nearly one degree every day, this method allows estimating the positions of advanced planets and points rather simple (the degrees of progression are roughly equivalent to the age of the individual).

Some of the most significant secondary progressions:

  • When the Progressed Sun Changes Sign: The progressed Sun may change sign three times over a person’s lifetime, depending on how long they live. When the advanced Sun is very late in a sign and about to move to a new sign (which lasts roughly a year), it is often a highly pivotal year with a lot of changes. When the progressed Sun changes signs, a person’s general orientation and responses to his or her environment usually shift dramatically. A variety of real-life events (such as relocation, a new job in a new field, etc.) are feasible, but the common theme is beginning over”out with the old and in with the new,” as well as a significant shift in an individual’s viewpoint and attitudes. There can be some worry and dread before the progressed Sun changes signs, even a sense that things are being “taken away from us.” This phase is known for hasty and incorrect decisions, as well as a sense of urgency. • The Maturity Cycle of the Progressed Moon: The progressed Moon travels through the houses of our natal chart, going full circle in around 27-28 years. It is traveling through a house that depicts elements of our lives that are coming into focus. We are more acutely aware of our requirements in these areas, but not always clearly. The advanced Moon in the 4th house, for example, is frequently associated with a strong desire and search for “roots and core life definition.” Our attention alters when the advanced Moon travels through our homes, even though our natal Moon sign “reigns over our emotional demands in a general sense.” Indeed, our emotional requirements appear to vary or change as the house position shifts. More information about The Progressed Moon Through the Houses may be found here (coming soon). The sign of your Progressed Moon represents the prevailing emotional attitude throughout that time period. More information about The Progressed Moon Through the Signs may be found here. Also, if you check back in time and see when the progressed Moon crossed over any of the four angles in your chart (the Ascendant, Midheaven, Descendant, and IC), you’ll notice that these progressions/passages frequently correspond to key events in your life. The advancement of the Moon to key degrees, as well as the progressed Moon in Aspect to Natal Planets and Points, are also significant.
  • The Lunation Cycle in Progress: This is the cycle that runs from one progressed New Moon to the next (every 27-28 years). Pay attention to the progressing Sun and Moon phases. Individuals begin a new phase or chapter in their lives naturally during the advanced New Moon phase. The Crescent phase introduces new problems and opportunities to the new cycle, as well as modifications that aren’t always pleasant, as the cycle’s goal isn’t totally evident at this stage. The First Quarter phase is a time of intense activity and construction, whereas the Gibbous phase is a time of refinement and fine-tuning. This prepares the way for the Full Moon phase, which is a time of accomplishment and fruition. This is the start of the progressed waning moon phase, when things start to melt and one realizes the need to let go. The Disseminating phase of the moon is a time for discussing and physically “disseminating” what has been learned during the waxing phase. The Third Quarter Moon phase, which follows, denotes a period in one’s life when one feels dissatisfied with the way one has been approaching life. This can be a perplexing moment, as one intuitively prepares for the waning Moon’s final stage: the Balsamic phase. Old systems begin to fade away during this stage, and there may be a need for withdrawal and reflection.
  • Planets that have progressed Conjuncting a Natal Planet or Point or Progressed Angles Conjuncting an Angle of the Natal Chart These natal and advanced angle activations (the Ascendant and Midheaven) usually indicate major personal changes in the native’s life.
  • Progressed Planet Aspects are the relationships that progressed planets have with their natal planets and points, as well as other progressed planets and points.
  • Transits to Progressed Planets and Angles: Transits to progressed planets and angles are incredibly important and should never be ignored. Transiting Saturn, for example, may not make any significant aspects to our natal chart, but it will have an impact on our lives if it squares our advanced Sun.

Personal Notes & Tips:

In my prediction work, I find the Secondary Progressed Moon cycles through the signs and houses to be extremely relevant. These broad concepts serve as a “backdrop” for comprehending the transits.

Multiple large progressions occurring at roughly the same time, in my experience, are more likely to indicate an external occurrence. For example, in my own life, the following key events occurred:

  • Secondary education progressed. When I met a significant partner, my vertex was conjunct my natal South Node. My Solar Arc Directed Venus was conjunct my natal Descendant at the same time.
  • When my Solar Arc Directed Venus conjunct my natal Vertex, another major relationship began. My advanced Sun was conjunct my South Node at the same time.

Secondary progressions serve as a metaphor. Keep in mind that we’re comparing one year of life to one day of life (and planetary movement).

Secondary progressions had never impressed me in my astrological studies. I tried to make sense of them, but I couldn’t find a link between key events and changes in my life and the secondary features that had progressed. It wasn’t until I learnt of two crucial “rules” that I realized how important they were:

  • “It is a cardinal rule that no direction may bring to pass what is not represented in the nativity,” wrote Charles E. O. Carter. There are very few exceptions to this rule. When the planets involved form a substantial interrelationship in the natal chart, progressions to progressions and progressions to natal positions are most noteworthy. As a result, the natal chart’s potential reigns supreme.
  • The importance of transits to secondary advanced planets cannot be overstated. Students of astrology are urged to make a tri-wheel with the natal chart in the center, secondary progressions in the second wheel, and transits in the outer (third) wheel when performing predictive work. Transits to both the natal and advanced charts, progressed planets in respect to the natal chart, and progressed planets in relation to other progressed planets are all easily visible this manner. When we include transits to progressed planets and points in our analysis, we get a lot more information.

If my secondary advanced Mars is currently forming a square to my natal Venus, for example, this may or may not correlate with a significant or obvious event (or sequence of events/changes) in my life if my natal Venus and Mars are not in aspect. It is more likely to indicate an incident if my natal Venus and Mars are in trine. It’s significantly more likely if either planet receives a transit (particularly from Venus or Mars).

As a result, transitions to progressions serve as triggers. Progressed planets and points are also triggered by lunar eclipses and eclipses.
