Third, one’s own and others’ perceptions of one’s facial characteristics have an impact on one’s later behavior and personality36. Prejudice associated with one’s face form may contribute to the development of maladaptive personality features (i.e., the ‘Quasimodo complex’38), much as perceived ‘cleverness’ of an individual may lead to higher educational attainment37. Longitudinal observational studies have looked at the relationships between appearance and personality over time, finding evidence of both’self-fulfilling prophecy’ and’self-defeating prophesy’ effects39.
Finally, some personality qualities are linked to emotional expressive behavior patterns that are habitual. The static features of the face may be shaped by habitual emotional responses, resulting in the production of wrinkles and/or the development of facial muscles.
Based on the Five-Factor Model or the Big Five (BF) model of personality40, research have demonstrated correlations between objective facial picture cues and general personality qualities. However, a brief look at the magnitudes of the impacts observed in these research (shown in Table 1) reveals a lot of disagreement. The findings tend to be inconsistent among studies and are difficult to replicate41. These discrepancies could be due to the use of limited samples of stimulus faces as well as large disparities in methodology. Studies using composite facial images created from groups of individuals with high and low scores on each of the Big Five dimensions6,7,8 often had larger impact sizes.
