How can I find out who my Ishta Devata is?
The Atmakarakain Navamsa in our birth charts can easily reveal information about one’s Ishta Devata. In our kundli, the Atmakaraka is the planet with the highest degree. The Karakamsa is the Atmakaraka in one’s Navamsa, and the twelfth house or sign from it corresponds to our Ishta Devata. The planets positioned in this house define our chosen deity; however, if this house is empty, the significator is the Lord of the House. Every planet is associated with a deity who must be worshipped.

The Elders do not always inform the youngsters of the Family Deity, which is something that should not happen.
If this fails, look for your ancestors’ names on your Father’s(for men only) side for at least three generations.
It is customary in the family to name the first kid after the Family Deity.
Check if a feminine name is provided for a guy if the Family Deity is a female and the eldest of the family is a male, as in Kamakshi (and for Female the reverse).
Otherwise, keep the current Deity (of which you are unsure) and add Subramanya as an additional Family Deity if you are a Saivaite, and Lord Balaji of Tirupati if you are a Vaishnavaite.
If you are honest in your search, you will learn the Deity’s name from unexpected sources.
