I’ve gathered screenshots from a few websites, like I’ve done throughout this series, to illustrate what I see as the dominating aspects, focal areas, and hierarchy.
This is my point of view. It’s fine if you see the designs differently. It is more necessary to think critically about the designs than to agree on what we believe.
An Event Apart
The image at the top of An Event Apart’s home page is the most prominent piece. It is the most significant component. It’s also a portrait of a person, which we’re drawn to. The huge white writing over the image creates contrast and draws your attention to it.
The content of the text “The design conference for web designers is perhaps the most significant piece of information that anyone visiting the page should be aware of. It makes a strong statement about what An Event Apart is and who the website is intended for. It’s probably the first item a newcomer to the site should look at.
The website’s logo, as well as the black background behind it, are focal areas “The testimonial and upcoming events are set as a large bold header.
You’ll note that the design primarily leverages size and color to generate new emphasis points and visual hierarchy as you scroll down the page. The size of important information is increased. It’s daring. It might be red. Occasionally, an image catches one’s attention.
Even if you only skimmed the page, you’d have a good idea of what the website is about, whether any conferences are coming to your region, and whether the abundance of testimonials has persuaded you.
Paid to Exist
The graphic of the bag at the top of Paid to Exist’s home page is the most prominent aspect. It’s a picture, and it’s bigger than everything else. It stands out against its surroundings since it is a graphic with a unique shape and intrinsic attractiveness.
The website’s name, some of the text to the right of the graphic, and the large green “Download button” are all focal points. Another prominent feature is the social sharing buttons.
You’ll notice three enormous numbered circles in the content area below that serve as focal points and guide you to the information that goes with them.
It is expected of you to read the information. To lure you in, notice how the headline above each paragraph reflects the color of the adjoining circle.
Consider the visual hierarchy of the circles and words. The large colorful circle (which represents one level in the hierarchy) attracts your attention and leads you to information on a higher level.
Mandy Sims
Mandy Sims’ website is a one-pager. The image of Mandy at the very top (not seen in the snapshot) is the main aspect for me. Mandy’s name is also the most prominent text.
However, there is a portion lower down the page that I would want to direct your attention to. The section’s heading, as you might assume, is the largest text in the section, thus it becomes a focal point.
The testimonies on the right side are likewise focal points. The testimonials’ background color is the same as the background color of the current link in the menu.
You can observe that Mandy provides coaching services to pleased clients even if you don’t read the language in this part because one level of the hierarchy communicates that.
Vanseo Design
This final example comes from my personal website. It’s an old blog post from a few years back. Please pardon my indulgence, but unlike the previous instances, I know exactly why each piece on the page is placed in the manner it is. Whether I succeeded or not is a different story, but I’m positive of my intentions.
The primary heading of the page is supposed to be the most prominent feature. This is a blog post that I want people to read, but I want to give them a sense of what it’s about before they commit their time to reading it.
Although the partial image catches the eye and appears to be more dominating, an image like this isn’t always visible at the top of every item on the website.
The RSS icon in the top-right and the logo in the top-left are both red to stand out a little more than the other content. Both might stick out more if they were a brighter red, but I didn’t want to draw attention to them. The same color is utilized in the headlines as well.
The meta information to the left of the main text is supposed to stand out. Local white space was used to boost the visual weight of plain text in this case. In an ideal world, someone would glance at it and learn about me as well as the post’s category and tags.
One design decision I made was to make links in the body less visible than they are on most websites. I want people to be able to find them, but not so many that they take you away from the material. I chose a blue that blends in well with the black text, and I used italics instead of bold. Because the connections aren’t supposed to be key points, I reduced their visual prominence.
My objective is that someone who comes across this or another post on the website would be able to immediately figure out what the article is about and learn some basic information about me, such as my name or the website’s name, before reading the piece.
