The big picture: past cycles
Another way to figure out what a newly discovered planet means is to look back at prior cycles and see how they relate to everyday happenings on Earth. Let’s take a look back at Sedna’s closest visit to Earth earlier this century, as she approaches her closest point to Earth later this century.
Neolithic revolution
The end of the last IceAge on Earth and the beginning of agriculture coincide with the last close flyby of Sedna. The Neolithic Revolution involved the widespread transformation of many human societies from a hunting and gathering lifestyle to one of agriculture and settlement, allowing for population expansion.

So, since the Neolithic revolution, the entire known human history has occurred in the last Sedna year. In fact, the whole recorded history of humanity has occurred in the last six Sedna months. Consider that for a moment. The Earth was created about 433,000 Sedna years ago, and people (who are recognizably human) first walked the Earth about 20 Sedna years ago.

However, not all of the water beneath the surface is hidden. On the tiny world, Dawn has discovered growing patches of ice and minerals related to liquid water.
A developing patch of ice on the bottom of Juling Crater, scraped out towards the mid-latitudes, was discovered by Andrea Raponi of the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF). A second study, led by INAF’s Filippo Giacomo Carrozzo, discovered soil alterations that they believe are linked to carbonates.
“The two works demonstrate that water is currently available on Ceres’ surface and that it causes geological and mineralogical changes,” he stated.
These areas may shift over thousands of years when the earth tilts. Over the course of 24,500 years, Ceres’ tilt relative to its orbit increases from 2 degrees to around 20 degrees, a relatively short time in astronomical terms. This can result in dramatic swings, with craters hiding water for extended periods of time. Because Ceres’ tilt is approaching its minimum right now, enormous expanses of terrain surrounding the poles are deprived of direct sunlight. However, when Ceres was at its greatest tilt 14,000 years ago, those zones diminished, leaving only a few spots where ice could continue to hide during the shift.
In a statement, study co-author and Dawn deputy principal investigator Carol Raymond, also of JPL, said, “The idea that ice could survive on Ceres for long periods of time is important as we continue to reconstruct the dwarf planet’s geological history, including whether it has been giving off water vapor.”
Dr. Simone Marchi, a senior research scientist at Southwest Research Institute, stated in a statement, “This discovery of a locally high concentration of organics is exciting, with broad implications for the astrobiology community.” “Ammonia-bearing hydrated minerals, water ice, carbonates, salts, and even organic compounds have all been discovered on Ceres. Dawn has demonstrated that Ceres has essential life components with this new discovery.”
