THE ASTRONOMY OF THE LUNAR NODES
If you’re a nerd, you’ve arrived in heaven. You’d probably make a great astrologer if you slept through physics but were wide-eyed when English class shifted to the Romantic poets, but you might want to skip this chapter.
So, what precisely are the Moon’s nodes? They aren’t planets, obviously. Let’s spend some time getting to know them thoroughly because they are the cornerstone of Evolutionary Astrology and the doorway to karmic analysis.
The Earth revolves the Sun, but it doesn’t appear that way from where we are. For millennia, our forefathers believed the Sun orbited the Earth, not the other way around. We stay with that visual illusion in our vocabulary and perspective because astrology is Earth-centered. The Sun circles the same band of stars every year, which humans can observe. The Zodiac is the name given to the band by astrologers. It’s known as the Ecliptic by astronomers.
Consider how the Earth sweeps out a flat circle of glass as it revolves around the Sun. The Plane of the Ecliptic is that disk. We project this Plane of the Ecliptic out onto an imaginary Celestial Sphere in our Earth-centered imaginations, a kind of big starry ball with us in the middle. We have the Celestial Sphere where the Plane of the Ecliptic meets the Celestial Sphere “The Sun’s yearly course is marked by a highway in the sky. Almost the same can be said for all of the planets. That’s how the Zodiac works.
The Moon revolves around the Earth. It takes just under 27 days and eight hours to complete that cycle. Consider how the Moon, while doing so, sweeps forth another flat circle of glass. The orbit of the Moon is defined by the Plane of the Moon. We also project it onto the Celestial Sphere, just as we did with the Ecliptic. (It’s useful to remember that the Moon’s orbit around the Sun is much smaller in reality than the Earth’s orbit around the Sun, but they’re the same size when projected onto the inside of the imaginary Celestial Sphere.)
The crucial point is that the Moon’s Orbit Plane is inclined to the Ecliptic by around five degrees. They don’t (5E 8 40) “To put it another way, lie flat. So the Moon is above the Ecliptic half of the time and below it half of the time. (And here we indulge in the European colonial myth of north being “above” and south being “below!”)
If you’ve mastered all of this, you’re ready to learn about the lunar nodes:
The Moon’s north node is located where the Moon crosses the Ecliptic going north. The Moon’s south node is where it crosses traveling south. The north node is defined as the point where the plane of the Moon’s orbit rises above the plane of the Ecliptic. The south node is defined as the point when it descends below the Ecliptic.
The Moon might be at any point in its orbit around the Earth. It only passes the Ecliptic twice a month, once ascending and once descending.
The Nodal Cycle
Toss a child’s top about. Assume it is spinning extremely quickly in a clockwise manner. You can see it start a gentle counter-clockwise wobble as it loses momentum before it topples over. The plane of the Moon’s orbit is gradually sliding backwards in the opposite direction as it goes around the Earth every month. At other words, the nodes, which are the points where the Moon’s orbit crosses the Ecliptic, do not stay in the same Zodiac degree for eternity. Instead, they move slowly backwards, requiring 6793.39 days to return to their original position. This equates to 18.5997 years, seven months, and a few days.
Another way to put it is that each sign of the Zodiac takes about a year and a half for either lunar node to move retrograde through.
Another way of putting it is that it takes the nodes little under nineteen days to travel one degree.
Eclipses
If you think about it, Solar and Lunar Eclipses fit into all of this nodal theory in a rather apparent way. As everyone knows, a solar eclipse is a major affair. To see one, people travel considerable distances. Many people are unaware of how near we are to a solar eclipse each month. A New Moon occurs every 29 days or so. This indicates that the Sun and Moon are aligned in the same Zodiac degree.
The reason for this is that, despite the fact that the Sun and Moon are aligned, the Moon is slightly above or below the Sun (remember that the plane of the Moon’s orbit and the Earth/Sun plane are roughly five degrees out of whack).
The lunar nodes are the only ones that aren’t out of whack.
The nodes, as we’ve seen, are the points at which the Moon’s orbit intersects or aligns with the Ecliptic. If a solar eclipse occurs, it merely implies that the New Moon has passed close to a lunar node. A lunar eclipse will only occur if the Full Moon occurs near a lunar node.
All of this can now be calculated using small hand-held calculators. Years ago, our forefathers constructed a large one to accomplish the same goal. It’s known as Stonehenge.
Mean Versus True Nodes
experienced so far. Occasionally, someone will sit next to me with the mean and true nodes separated by barely a degree or so, as is normal. However, for this person, the difference is sufficient to place the two nodes in opposite signs. For example, the mean lunar south node could be in 29EII 37 whereas the genuine one is in 0Ea 43. Such folks are priceless to me, or at the very least wonderful lab rats! When I was trying to figure out what was going on, I told folks two possible karmic explanations and asked them which one felt appropriate. I then compared the two versions to my personal perceptions of them as people and the contours of their lives on the outside. These human realities constitute astrology’s Supreme Court, far more valuable than any technical astronomical argument.
It is the mean lunar node that has carried the day for me more frequently than not.
Two words of caution:
To begin, do not use this test to compare real and mean nodal house positions. House cusps are fundamentally fuzzier than sign cusps; they “flow” a little more, like seasons changing, whereas sign cusps work with more clear “clicks,” like television channels. The accuracy of someone’s birth time is a major stumbling block in astrology. House cusps can be thrown off by even minor errors, making them suspect for our purposes. So, if the actual node makes more personal sense to you in terms of its home position than the mean one, Well, you’re probably correct about which house the node is in, but I’m guessing your birth time is off by a minute or two.
Second, resist the temptation to look at only one or two charts when examining the differences between mean and actual nodes. Half of astrology’s truly stupid beliefs have come from one source. “Jupiter is in my best friend’s first home, and she adores cats. As a result, Jupiter in the first house denotes a fondness for cats.
We need to cast our nets wider in order to find consistent patterns, and it’s in those patterns that we’ll find alchemical gold.
Is it true that the South Node is the genuine node?
The North Node of Destiny is currently in Taurus, while the South Node is in Scorpio. This started on January 18, 2022, and will last for 18 months, ending on July 19, 2023.

In their 50s, people with a Pisces north node and a Virgo south node have Saturn in Taurus, and most of the people I’ve spoken to from that generation have an oppositional Jupiter in Scorpio.
My friend Maya was the one who truly helped me understand the Pisces north node Virgo south node. People her age, she said, have a lot of wounds surrounding their voices. They’re people who aren’t sure if the tales they have to share about themselves are the appropriate ones, if other people will “understand” them, and if there are too many stories like theirs.

They frequently compare themselves to others, but it isn’t always about desiring what others have. I’ve noticed that persons with a Pisces north node and a Virgo south node have highly critical inner voices, and that they frequently try to protect themselves by being harsh on themselves before anyone else can, but that it doesn’t always manifest in the ways we expect.
The north node of Pisces is traditionally delineated. The Virgo south node is all about prudishness, oversensitivity, and nitpickiness. One thing I’ve noticed about the Pisces north node and Virgo south node is that they’re a mess. I say this in the nicest possible way. They usually have a million and a half things on their plate, feel like they’re always dealing with buddy group drama, and believe that sticking to a simple routine will drive them insane.
Another thing I’ve seen about the Pisces north node Virgo south node axis, especially among individuals in their 30s, is that it attracts a lot of stoners. Now, when I say stoners, I don’t mean folks who smoke once in a while. I’m referring to those who have spent years of their lives semi-stoned and rely on marijuana to unwind. This isn’t a verdict. Security Issues: Virgo South Node
The Moon’s south node is all about what the Moon has internalized. Mercury’s exaltation and domicile are both in Virgo. It’s here that Venus takes a tumble.
Virgo’s south node is associated with labor. Mercury is the planet of labor, thus this is the case. The concept that it is far safer to earn than to receive is what the south node in Virgo is all about. It’s the belief that you can’t genuinely take what’s offered to you, that life is devoid of gifts, and that trust must be earned rather than given. The Virgo South Node is about the urge to earn everything, including the things that are impossible to gain, such as love, trust, or passion.
I meet a lot of folks with the Virgo south node who have inherited a type of work or a work ethic from a family member. There are immigrants whose presence in a country is often determined by their ability to work, people whose mothers worked before there were a range of employment accessible for women, and people who were taught that beauty and grace are won through suffering and labor.
The Virgo south node is not a workaholic. This is a tough south node, although it is frequently harsh on the individual with the south node in Virgo, rather than a south node that lashes out at anyone in its immediate proximity. Part of the task of labor is, in reality, the work of pretending that you aren’t working at all. People born under the sign of Virgo have a laid-back personality. They frequently build this laid-back attitude by continually scrambling to be where every buddy needs them to be, by concealing personal needs, and by always attempting to be available.
Labor entails treating one’s own body as though it were disposable. The Virgo south node does this because it considers that being useful is safer than being useless. They are more concerned with what they can accomplish than with the consequences of their perpetual availability. They may be enraged by individuals who appear to be arrogant, or by those who have the luxury of taking a day off every now and then. They may be filled with rage at other people’s limitations and constraints. This is because the Virgo south node does not believe that having limitations is at all safe. They feel that only by pushing over your limitations can you achieve safety.
Labor is also characterized by a great deal of discomfort. The Virgo south node has a difficult time integrating their pain into their identity. After all, why not? Pain has no logic. It’s complete rubbish. Suffering serves no purpose, and the ideal form of pain is the kind that can be kept out of the way.
Fears: Pisces North Node
The north node of Pisces represents the difficulties of accepting pain. The most difficult aspect of the Pisces north node is that it represents things that cannot be earned: beauty, whimsicality, and romance. It represents self-acceptance, which cannot be achieved via hard work but must be accepted through knowledge.
The Pisces north node is constantly striving to better whatever it is that they are trying to mend. Willpower, criticism, or strategy are not effective in this mending. The healing that the Pisces north node seeks is based on a self-awareness that can only come from knowing and understanding one’s own grief.
The north node of Pisces is afraid of their suffering. They tell themselves that it doesn’t exist, that it’s pointless, that it’s insignificant, and that life can carry on without this awareness of pain. They convince themselves that they aren’t frightened of their anguish, but that they simply don’t have the time to deal with it. They persuade themselves that they don’t have the luxury of processing pain, that they don’t have choices, and that everyone expects them to be pain-tolerant so they can keep moving.
Because the Pisces north node prefers to reject suffering, they are frequently unaware that they are afraid of anything at all. This, I believe, is why there are so many stoners in Pisces north node. Weed is an excellent pain reliever, as well as a fear and anxiety reliever. It is, however, a medicine that is not linked to breakdowns or personal weakness. Weed is a cool substance. It’s just cannabis, after all. Smoking cannabis is utilized to relax cool and relaxed folks.
The Pisces north node, on the other hand, is not about pain management. It’s not about bettering oneself despite suffering. The north node of Pisces is all about figuring out what suffering is trying to tell you. Despite its ineffectiveness, pain serves a definite purpose. It’s something that knows you better than you know yourself.
