Do hyenas have a bad reputation?
In the gloomy atmosphere that surrounds the four species of hyenas, watching the BBC’s blue-chip natural history broadcast Seven Worlds One Planet on December 8 was a breath of fresh air. The documentary, which depicted a brown hyena living in an abandoned diamond mine in Namibia, was factual, sympathetic, and fascinating, portraying the animal as a caring mom who had raised nine generations of cubs. Excellent filming and a lack of sensationalism revealed the arduous hunting for food and vast distances walked by hyenas in a dry environment. It will have won the hearts of millions of viewers by endearing a species that is routinely mocked.
This portrayal stands in stark contrast to the typical portrayal of wildlife in documentaries, news reports, and films. Consider the skulking, wicked, cowardly, and scornful portrayals of Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed in the 1994 animated version of the Lion King, as well as the more contemporary rethinking and renaming in the 2019 remake.
They are loosely modeled on Sub-Saharan African spotted hyenas and are full and out villains, completely wicked, cowardly, and violent. They are claimed to have wiped out all life in the country where they live as allies of Scar, the malevolent uncle of the future lion king.
Hyenas are depicted as nasty thieves in anti-crime advertisements in the United Kingdom, and they are a group of thugs in the BBC’s 2018 Dynasties series, where they are a gang of criminals endangering the lion pride’s survival. But, in actuality, are hyenas like this? And how did this evil and despised image emerge?
Out of the more than 100 species of hyenas that have been identified from fossils dating back millions of years in some cases, only four remain. The spotted hyena (Crocuta Crocuta), which is found in Africa from the Sahel south in areas of savanna, open woodland, and even forest (save for the deep rainforest of West and Central Africa), is the most well-known villainous villains in the Lion King and Dynasties films. Despite habitat loss and competition with humans and their livestock, the IUCN Red List of Species estimates that there are between 27,000 and 47,000 left. They are not considered vulnerable. They are hunters as well as scavengers.
The BBC documentary shows a brown hyena (Parahyaena brunnea) that lives in the desert and semi-arid regions of southern Africa. They eat tsamma melons and other wild-growing fruit and vegetable matter and are mostly scavengers of carcasses from lion, cheetah, and leopard killings, but they sometimes kill small mammals like as springhares, aardvarks, reptiles, and insects. There are about 10,000 in the wild, and they are classified as “near threatened.”
The striped hyena (Hyaena hyaena) is likewise considered endangered. It was demonized in the latest Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle films and is found across the Middle East, sections of Central Asia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India, as well as west into North Africa and East Africa. For whatever reason, the filmmakers turned Tabaqiu the Jackal (from Rudyard Kipling’s Jungle Book) into a sniveling, filthy, and fly-infested striped hyena who follows the tiger Shere Khan around as his servant. The striped hyena is primarily a scavenger, but it also hunts small mammals and consumes vegetables, invading melon orchards frequently. There are estimated to be 5-10,000 people left.
The aardwolf (Proteles cristata) of eastern and southern Africa is the fourth species. It feeds nearly solely on Trinervitermes termites, and its populations are split in locations where the bug is widespread. Small mammals, reptiles, insects, and bird eggs may be eaten. The IUCN does not provide a precise estimate of numbers, however they are classified as ‘least concern’ by the organization.
Why, therefore, are hyenas so reviled and hunted? The reasons are complex, and they differ to some extent from one place to the next. The spotted hyena’s vocal range is one simple explanation for its popularity (howls, whoops, snarls and an almost insane giggling). Many people in their current and historical ranges, which included North Africa and West Asia, believed hyenas could imitate human voices to lure them away from safety and into attacks by hyena packs as large as 100 animals in some parts of East Africa. They were blamed for attacks on animals and even people, and they still are, with some justification. There were frequent press accounts of hyenas attacking persons in the open at night while I lived in Malawi in 1981-2.
Scavenging by three of the species (with the exception of aardwolves) earned them the reputation of being filthy eaters of carrion, human waste, and trash. They were also despised for devouring the bodies of deceased humans, which happens in cultures where the dead are buried in shallow graves or left out in the open. Hyenas are expected to clean up the bodies in these civilizations, but they nevertheless have a poor reputation. Striped hyenas have been seen digging up tombs in the Middle East. The fact that they are associated with grave robbing or devouring human remains has only added to the dread with which they are seen.
Body parts of spotted and striped hyenas may be utilized in charms, fetishes, or traditional medicines in some regions of their ranges. Hyenas were associated with witchcraft in southern Africa, where they were thought to be witches’ familiars and steeds, as well as the fabled ape-like creature, the tokoloshe.
Nature’s recyclers, they clean up sick carcasses and garbage and are accomplished and skilled hunters. They kill more of their own food than lions, according to scientists like Hans Kruuk, Laurence Frank, and Kay Holekamp. When lions and hyenas fight over a carcass, it’s usually not because the hyenas are scavenging, but because the lions are attempting to steal a kill. Hyenas are intriguing, intelligent, sophisticated, and social animals that ought to be studied and revered.
Professor Keith Somerville is a senior research fellow at the University of London’s Institute of Commonwealth Studies and a member of the University of Kent’s Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology, where he teaches at the Centre for Journalism. Humans and Lions is his novel. Conflict, Conservation, and Coexistence was released in July of this year, and he is currently working on Humans and Hyenas. Misunderstood Monsters.
What causes hyenas to laugh?
They are recognized for their “laughing vocalization,” which is a high-pitched sequence of brief gigglelike sounds. Instead than being associated with hyenas having a good time, these sounds are typically made when they are threatened or attacked. When a hyena is frustrated, it may make a laugh-like sound.
