The Gita’s fifth chapter delves into the concept of karmasannyasa yoga and compares it to karma yoga. In the beginning shlokas of chapters six and eighteen, the same idea is developed further. These verses make it clear that karmasannyasa yoga and karma yoga are not mutually exclusive. Spiritual upliftment can be achieved by both the renunciation of works and their selfless performance. He who is really settled in one or both reaps the benefits of both.
There is just a difference in emphasis between karma yoga and karmasannyasa yoga. A seeker on the road of karmasannyasa wanders in search of wisdom, knowledge of the imperishable and unchanging self, whereas a karma yoga aspirant focuses on performing his worldly obligations. A sannyasi renounces the fundamental notion of doership, whereas a karma yogi just gives up attachment to deeds and their effects. A sannyasi relinquishes control over his or her activities. He gives up the perception that he is doing something while executing any action.
Though both karma yoga and karmasannyasa yoga lead to embodied soul liberation, it has been declared that unselfish labor performance is preferable than renunciation because action comes more readily to humans. It is easier to live an active life than it is to engage in complex metaphysical theories. Furthermore, a karma yogi has real-life experiences that mature into spiritual insight.
Karma yoga is used to prepare for sannyasa. It has been said that renunciation is impossible to achieve without karma yoga. When a man of contemplation devotes himself to the path of karma yoga, however, mental impurities such as anger, greed, desire, fear, and envy are gradually washed away. As a result, his intellect gets increasingly pure. One can realize the reality of his own actual nature with such a pure mentality. The soul’s truth is disclosed to him. He had a firsthand encounter with himself. He discovers that he is a part of the eternal consciousness that is undifferentiated. He begins to realize that every being’s soul, or formless essence, is the same. He is then linked with the Divine since the individual soul’s truth is identical to the Supreme Self’s truth. To put it another way, he recognizes the Eternal Truth.
On the path of renunciation, the one who has reached perfection realizes that he was the subject who was aware of all other objects, including his own body, mind, and intellect, as the eternal soul. He realizes that it was just the senses that interacted with their respective things while performing any action such as seeing, walking, sleeping, breathing, or doing any other work. And he was distinct from the rest of them. As a result, although remaining completely engaged in all efforts, he does not regard himself as a doer of works or a reaper of rewards.
Renunciation is not determined by outward behavior or seeming inaction. True renunciation and, as a result, spiritual freedom is found in letting rid of the illusory ego and cultivating an impersonal attitude. Even while remaining completely engaged on the surface, a sannyasi renounces all actions inwardly.
Renunciation is not a passive or inactive state. Those who, in the name of renunciation, forego necessary action without first purifying their minds through the practice of karma yoga, face a double whammy. They are unable to appreciate earthly riches or to progress spiritually. Renunciation by someone who is not fully qualified to take sannyasa is a source of unhappiness for both the individual and society as a whole.
On the path of sannyasa, perfection does not imply a complete lack of labour. Rather, the person who has developed an interior attitude of renunciation acts with ardour. A sannyasi’s mind is clean and equanimous, and it overflowing with spontaneous vigor. His ability to work is based on his endless reserves of energy. He works without attachment, fear, or stress, merely to carry out God’s will. He is joyful because he has attained inner freedom.
Even after death, those who have not renounced the rewards of their activities are confronted with three types of outcomes: favorable, unwanted, and mixed. The one who has renounced, on the other hand, suffers no consequences. He transcends the fruits of his deeds because he is aware of his ultimate nature as pure consciousness.
