What is the reason behind the Colorado Belle’s closure?
In 1979, Advanced Patent Technology, a slot machine manufacturer and slot route operator, revealed intentions to establish a hotel and casino, with Ramada managing the hotel. The casino debuted on November 10, 1980, after construction began in October as a joint venture with John Fulton, a Southern California restaurant.
A preliminary agreement was signed in 1983 to sell the casino for $1.6 million to a company led by attorney William Morris and Circus Circus Enterprises executives William Bennett and William Pennington, but Morris pulled out a month later. In June 2007, MGM Mirage sold the Colorado Belle and the Edgewater for a total of $200 million to Anthony Marnell III and Sher Gaming.
Golden Entertainment paid $190 million buying the Colorado Belle and the Edgewater from Marnell and Sher in January 2019.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak ordered the Colorado Belle to close on March 17, 2020, to prevent the virus from spreading further. Due to the economic impact of business closures and market uncertainties, Golden Entertainment stated on May 18, 2020 that the Colorado Belle will remain closed indefinitely. Around 400 employees were put off, while some may be able to find work at Golden Entertainment’s other casinos, such as the Edgewater and Aquarius Casino Resort.
