Ang Lee directed Gemini Man, a 2019 American action thriller film. The film, written by David Benioff, Billy Ray, and Darren Lemke and starring Will Smith, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Clive Owen, and Benedict Wong, follows a retiring hitman who is targeted by a much younger clone of himself while on the run from a corrupt private military firm.
The picture, which was first conceptualized in 1997 by screenwriter Lemke, spent over two decades in development hell. Several directors were involved at one point, including Tony Scott, Curtis Hanson, and Joe Carnahan, as well as a number of actors, including Harrison Ford, Mel Gibson, and Sean Connery. The screenplay (which had gone through numerous rewrites) was purchased by Skydance Media from Walt Disney Pictures in 2016, and Ang Lee signed on to helm for Skydance in October 2017, with Paramount Pictures handling distribution. Filming took place from February through May of this year.
Gemini Man was released on October 1, 2019 in standard 3D, Dolby Cinema (2K Dolby Vision 120 fps), 4DX, IMAX 3D, and ScreenX formats, as well as in 120 fps HFR (high frame rate) “3D+” on select screens in the United States by Paramount Pictures on October 11, 2019. (including 16 Dolby Cinema and 47 IMAX 3D with Laser screens worldwide and only one TCL cinema that presented film in 3D 4K 120 fps but without HDR). No one showed the native 4K Dolby Vision 120 frames per second. The film was presented in Dolby Vision at 59.94 frames per second on UHD Blu-ray. The film’s writing and plot garnered mostly unfavorable reviews from critics, however the performances were lauded. Smith’s de-aging and the high frame rate of 120 frames per second attracted conflicting reviews, with some hailing them as technical triumphs and others dismissing them as unconvincing. It was also a box office disaster, making $173.5 million against a $138 million budget, resulting in a $111 million loss for Paramount.

Is it worthwhile to watch Gemini Man?
Sex and Skin: This isn’t the kind of action thriller with wild hot sensual scenes in between all the fighting, which is refreshing. A huge age difference between a graying leading man and a fresh young ingenue, for example. That is one advantage Gemini Man has.
Our Opinion: Oh, how I wished Gemini Man was a wonderful guy! What a bizarre, soulless film with so much promise squandered. The decision to shoot it at 120 frames per second (the average movie is 24!) results in an odd, hyperrealistic effect that makes you feel like you’re watching a computer game unfold. The set pieces in the film are surprisingly lackluster, and the performances are lifeless. It also makes the cloning technique look a little less credible. This isn’t my biggest criticism of Gemini Man, but it is a significant flaw that could have made it shine as a riveting thriller.
A gimmick isn’t enough to keep a film going. That is the reality. While seeing how far technology has progressed is thrilling and mind-boggling, Will Smith and his clone are unable to make Gemini Man work on their own. The narrative is clumsy and occasionally makes you roll your eyes; the scenes involving the clone’s discovery and origins are actually uncomfortable to see it feels like something out of a basic screenwriting class. We don’t want our food spoon-fed to us. We’ll be able to sort it out. It would have been a lot better film if Gemini Man had allowed us do a little more of the study ourselves. Instead, it opts for a brilliant light show that leaves you feeling quite empty by the end, providing an enjoyable but forgettable (and somewhat terrifying?) view into the future of cinema. But what about the story? There isn’t much of that around here. And there aren’t many excuses with a director and cast like this.
It’s not that Gemini Man is particularly rude or difficult to watch; it’s exactly the kind of movie you’d leave on the TV while doing other things, or choose if it’s available for free on an aircraft. It’ll suffice. It’s entertaining. It could have been a wonderful, thoughtless summer popcorn movie with a few changes. But, at an era when top-notch, emotionally gripping action films are released in droves, Gemini Man falls short. It simply lacks the necessary heart.
SKIP IT, is our recommendation. While the technology and graphics are unquestionably stunning, Gemini Man lacks a personality (or much of a script). It’s a shame, because the concept is genuinely quite intriguing at its core, but a gimmick can’t salvage a movie. While it may be suitable for airplane watching, only a few minutes of this film reveals why it was stuck in development purgatory for two decades.

However, no cinemas in the United States have all of the required resources to show this film in the way Lee intended, and the tale is such a jumble that you’ll question if Lee paid attention to it at all.
“After serving in the Marines, professional assassin Henry Brogan (Smith) has worked for the US government’s Defense Intelligence Agency for the past 25 years. Henry plans to retire to his remote plot of land in Georgia after killing dozens of people on his bosses’ ordersbut there’s something odd about his final job. He was told that the man he was killing was a bioterrorist, but a former colleague claims that the man was only a scientist.
So, who was this mysterious individual, and why was Henry ordered to murder him? Henry’s investigations take him back in time, forcing him to confront his past with Clay Verris (Clive Owen), his former Marine commanding officer. Verris is now the CEO of Gemini, a private security organization with large government contracts, and he still has a grudge towards Henry. When Verris sends an assassin after Henry, the guy is forced to postpone his retirement plans. Henry begins his escape from Clay and pursuit of the truth with the help of Danny (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), a Defense Intelligence Agency operative.
“The fundamental secret of “Gemini Man” was tragically revealed in all of the film’s marketing materialsthat the younger clone Clay sends after Henry is in fact a copy of Henry himselfand it’s odd that the film instead pretends that this discovery is some enormous secret. The characters act as if they can’t tell they’re clones of each other for roughly half of the movie, and it’s a strange persistence that knocks viewers out of the experience. It’s also odd that the film employs notions like parental abuse and warzone trauma to provoke identity problems that it never answers. Instead, the film establishes a shallow and underdeveloped rivalry between Henry and Clay, while Winstead’s Danny waits around doing nothing.
The film’s various technological technology make for occasionally stunning, but frequently unpleasant viewing. Every pore on Smith’s face, every hair in his beard, and every blade of grass in the field in which he’s ready to assassinate a guy all visible in the opening scene. However, Lee’s fast frame rate makes a number of sequences appear sped up, unnatural, or as if they were shot in front of a green screen. It’s a curious juxtaposition between the characters becoming more real and approachable and the locations around them appearing completely phony, and it’s becoming increasingly annoying.
Aside from the cutting-edge technology, “Gemini Man” is unable to support its own existence. The plot is hackneyed, the characters are underdeveloped, and even Smith’s charisma can’t save a plot that has very nothing to say about human nature. “Gemini Man,” like last year’s “Alita: Battle Angel,” has some visually stunning moments but is ultimately pretty shallow.
