A Lot of Dramatic Heft Has Been Added In the Past 20 Years
The fundamental narrative of “Old Hitman Faces Off Against Younger Clone” is quite straightforward and engaging, but there was always the risk that it would come across as a more high-concept but ultimately inferior version of Face/Off. Indeed, assessments of earlier drafts of the script that have leaked online over the years have been mixed, with the project being criticized for clichs and poor character development.
Benioff, on the other hand, was brought in to rewrite the script long before his Game of Thrones peak, and his version of the script remains the basis for what was filmed.
When you add in Lee, an Oscar winner who has proven himself with action and high-concept CGI (see: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and The Life of Pi), but who can also make an affecting low-budget film with nothing more than an emotional story and some good acting (see: Brokeback Mountain), we’re sure to get something more than just a movie for weekend afternoon viewing on basic cable. There’s a lot to work with here: terrible governments, an older man reflecting on his youth (on numerous levels), and his enemy coming to terms with the idea that he’s a clone meant to kill, specifically the man he’s cloned from.
Expect not only some fantastic CGI and high-concept action sequences when it hits theaters on October 11th, but also some solid drama if the buzz is accurate.
