Texas had no issue putting 17-year-olds on Death Row in the late 1990s. The state didn’t forbid the execution of criminals who were children at the time of their crime until 2005. As a result, Little’s sentence was commuted to life in prison seven years after the murder, allowing him to avoid death row. In 2038, he will be able to apply for parole.
So what did Leo Gordon Little III do while he was inside? He is now a man of God, I guess. He is an ordained minister who mentors other prisoners spiritually and studies and teaches the Bible. Additionally, he considers “reconciliation” with Christopher Chavez’s family frequently.
He might need to ask the family for forgiveness first, though, before they can reconcile. Will he ever obtain it? Perhaps. Maybe not. That “wonderful thing” might not be here yet.

Who murdered Christopher Chavez?
Each of us has a distinct path to achieving the American Dream. Some of us are fortunate enough to be born into wealth, while others use their initiative to seize opportunities that allow them to enjoy that luxury. Still others of us start at the bottom and, tragically, make expensive mistakes along the way.
Christopher Chavez was shot and killed in San Antonio in 1998, and Jose Zavala, then 39, was found guilty of capital murder. Jose was 17 years old at the time of the murder.
Jose was a troublesome youngster in the late 1990s who had had a few small run-ins with the law as a result of being a mischievous teen. No one disputes the reality that Jose was shaped by his surroundings as he grew up in an underprivileged neighborhood with failing school systems, poverty, and a lack of chances, resources, and direction.
Jose’s motive on the night of Christopher Chavez’s death was not murder but rather monetary gain. Jose believed that he and his co-defendant Leo Little were simply robbing individuals for their money, like they had done in the past without using force. However, Jose’s fellow defendant had his own strategy.
According to “I Am a Killer” (Season 2, Episode 3, “An Ordinary Boy”) on Netflix, Jose co-defendant was the only one who killed Christopher Chavez. Jose was unaware that someone would die that night, he had no weapon, and Leo Little was hatching a plot of his own in a different car. Even though Jose did not commit the murder of this innocent man, he has not refuted his involvement in the events leading up to the crime, and his co-statements defendant’s have corroborated this claim.
Because Jose took part in the robbery before the murder, he was charged with capital murder under the Texas Law of Parties at the time of his sentencing. According to this law, if someone committed a felony before or in the course of committing a murder, you are still legally accountable for the crime even though you had no intention of murdering the person or knowledge that a murder would occur.
With this petition, we hope to shed attention on and amend The Texas Law of Parties’ conditions while also giving Jose, who is now serving a life sentence, a chance to meet with the Texas Parole Board of Pardons before 2038.
