The brightest day on Dec. 3 would be if Venus’s atmosphere reflected light evenly in all directions (known as Lambertian reflectance). The highest brightness occurs at a higher angle between the Sun, Venus, and the Earth due to forward scattering by Venus’s atmosphere (called phase angle). Comet Leonard will begin to rise above the west-northwestern horizon about 30 minutes after sunset on Thursday, Dec. 9, 2021. (5:16 p.m. EST). After that, it will shift slightly higher and more to the left each evening.

Comet Leonard will appear 4.5 degrees above the eastern horizon on Sunday, December 12, 2021, as morning twilight begins at 6:14 a.m. EST. This should be a good opportunity to watch for this comet, as later in the day at 8:54 a.m. EST it will be at its closest to the Earth.
Comet Leonard will appear 6.5 degrees above the western horizon on Sunday, December 12, 2021, around 30 minutes after sunset at 5:16 p.m. EST. The comet will be setting just before evening twilight ends, so this should be a nice opportunity to search for it (at 5:50 p.m.).
December 13
Comet Leonard will rise around 6:37 a.m. EST the next morning, about 12 minutes after morning twilight begins, and will appear less than 2 degrees above the eastern horizon 30 minutes before dawn at 6:48 a.m. The comet will be seen in the early sky for the last time until March 2022, when it will only be viewed through a huge telescope.
On Monday evening, Dec. 13, 2021, comet Leonard will appear 8 degrees above the west-southwestern horizon about 30 minutes after sunset at 5:17 p.m. EST, and it will still be about 2 degrees above the horizon as evening twilight ends at 5:50 p.m. This is a wonderful opportunity to look for this comet once more.
December 14
As previously stated, the Geminid meteor shower is expected to peak early on Tuesday, December 14, 2021. After moonset after 2:59 a.m. EST, but before the sky begins to show any hint of dawn before 6:16 a.m. EST, is the optimum time to look. This meteor shower has the potential to produce 140 to 150 visible meteors per hour in optimal conditions.
On the evening of Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2021, about 30 minutes after sunset at 5:17 p.m. EST, comet Leonard will appear 9 degrees above the west-southwestern horizon, and it will be about 3.5 degrees above the horizon as evening twilight ends at 5:50 p.m. This could be close to when the comet is at its brightest if it emits a lot of dust that causes forward scattering (like the bright light around the edge of a cloud blocking the Sun).
December 15
Comet Leonard will appear 10 degrees above the southwestern horizon about 30 minutes after sunset on Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2021. As evening twilight finishes at 5:50 p.m. EST, it will be around 4.5 degrees above the west-southwestern horizon. The comet will appear to shift to the left and somewhat higher along the horizon each night during the next few evenings, but it will become dimmer as it moves away from Earth.
The planet Mercury will emerge above the west-southwestern horizon 30 minutes after sunset for the first time on Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2021. (an approximation of when it may start being visible in the glow of dusk).
December 17
Comet Leonard will appear roughly 5 degrees below the brilliant planet Venus on Friday evening, December 17, 2021. Without binoculars or a telescope, it may be difficult to see the comet by this time, but Venus may provide a bright guide for finding it. From the time evening darkness ends until roughly January 10, 2022, comet Leonard will remain visible above the horizon.
At 9:16 p.m. EST on Friday, Dec. 17, 2021, the Moon will be at apogee, its greatest distance from the Earth during this orbit.
December 18
The next full Moon will be on Saturday, December 18, 2021, at 11:32 p.m. EST. This is a full Moon weekend since the Moon will be full for three days around this period, from Friday evening to Monday morning.
