What do you call baby scorpions?
The Elmwood Park Zoo in Pennsylvania just welcomed “scorplings,” a brood of newborn Emperor Scorpions. Baby scorpions are born alive, unlike most other arachnids. Because the shells of these young scorplings have not yet hardened, they must ride on mom’s back for protection. Emperor Scorpions are among the largest and least toxic scorpions, making them a popular pet. However, over-collecting may pose a threat to the species’ survival in the wild.

Because scorpions are arachnids, the same class of arthropods as spiders, they are susceptible to many of the same toxins. Individual scorpions can be killed with any spider spray found in the food shop. Spider sprays should be used with caution because they may be poisonous to your pets.
Shoes & Knives
You can smash scorpions by stomping on them or piercing their outer shell with a knife, despite their strength. Keep in mind that you’ll need to get quite near to a scorpion to kill it with one of these methods, so a brick or sledgehammer could be a better option.
Boric Acid/Borax
Boric acid and, to a lesser extent, Borax are natural compounds that can be sprayed or placed on scorpions to kill them ultimately. Because the chemical dehydrates the scorpions, the procedure takes a long time. The scorpion will still be able to sting for a while because it will take some time. Keep dogs away from boric acid since inhaling or ingesting it can be fatal.
Diatomaceous Earth (DE)
Diatomaceous earth, a powder created from fossilized diatoms that is harmless for both pets and people, has a similar dehydrating effect. The scorpion’s exoskeleton is cut by its sharp edges. DE can be sprinkled both inside and outside, across door thresholds and in cracks and crevices where scorpions are likely to come into touch with it. DE has the extra benefit of assisting in the management of other insects.
Cats
Cats are skilled at capturing and killing scorpions, but you must be cautious since they may be bitten or harmed. If you have hens, they can also help with population control.
Sticky Traps
The same traps that are used to catch small rodents can also be used to catch scorpions. Put them near water sources, in dark places where scorpions hide, such as closets, near access points, in garages, and anywhere else scorpions have been sighted. If you have pets or children, you should opt for non-toxic traps. Using glue traps to keep track of the scorpion population in your home is a good idea.
When looking for scorpions, go at night when they’re most active. Because their exoskeletons shine in ultraviolet light, you can use a black light bulb in a flashlight to find them. Wear long pants, long sleeved shirts, gloves, and closed-toed shoes when searching. When handling scorpions, long tweezers can help you retain your distance.
