Is Smith & Wesson the manufacturer of Taurus firearms?
Forjas Taurus (translation: Taurus Forge) grew from humble origins as a tiny tool manufacturer in Porto Alegre, Brazil, over 60 years ago to become a diverse, international firm and one of the world’s major small weapons producers. In 1941, the business created its first revolver. The gun was made up of parts from numerous different manufacturers at the time, including Colt, Smith & Wesson, and a few Spanish brands. The Model 38101SO was the name given to the first revolver. Taurus quickly established itself as a prominent player in the South American market, and it has continued to expand.
Meanwhile, a conglomerate known as Bangor Punta had purchased Smith & Wesson. Bangor Punta also bought 54 percent of Taurus in 1970. As a result, the two businesses became “sisters.” Taurus was never owned by Smith & Wesson. They were both stand-alone businesses. However, much technology and methodology was exchanged between the two over the next seven years. Some may be surprised to learn that more of what was “correct” in Porto Alegre was sent to Springfield than was sent south of the equator from Springfield.
Our current ownership purchased 54 percent of Taurus outright from Bangor Punta in 1977. A mission to increase the entire quality of Taurus products was launched right away. In addition, the company has started a rapid expansion campaign.
Beretta had won a large contract to build small guns for the Brazilian army in 1974. Beretta agreed to build a facility in Brazil and hire Brazilian workers as part of the transaction.
