On February 25, 1972, Pink Moon was released as an eleven-song LP. Nick Drake revealed his soul in a way that can only be characterized as a stripped-down, acoustic version of himself over the course of 28 minutes. He had a full band behind him, big production, and richness in practically every song on his first two albums. He finished every song with just his exquisite voice and an acoustic guitar during the first of his two midnight sessions. There were no overdubbed vocals, no overproduction, simply a straightforward recording of his compositions as he saw fit. The only time he did a wonderful simple piano overdub on the title track and the first tune, “Pink Moon,” was on the second night of recording.
“Pink Moon” is a song with a simple message but an ambiguous meaning. “Saw it written and I saw it say/ Pink moon is on its way/ And none of you stand so tall/ Pink Moon going to get you all,” Drake sings in his signature smooth soulful voice, warning us that our fate is approaching. They seem poetic and dreary, like a dark sorrowed soul that existed within him, like the most of his tracks on this album. This song could be about a malevolent mood infecting those around him, or it could just be a metaphor for death approaching them regardless of height. As bad as that sounds, he doesn’t sing it in a sorrowful way; rather, he sings it in a haunting, heavy-hearted manner, as if he’s given up on saving himself and others, which reflected well on his personal life at the time. Similarly, his guitar provides a chord-filled, harmonic melody, while the piano break in the middle of the song provides a wonderful respite and sets the tone for this bleak vision for the near future.
“Place To Be” is a considerably more structured song than “Naivety,” with three stanzas portraying three separate aspects of his life: naivety, rejection, and desperation. This is one of the more emotional tunes on Pink Moon because of Drake’s love for this girl. The despair that gradually engulfed his existence made it all the more clear that everyone else in the world is just as depressed as he is, with just their artificial facade concealing their true sentiments. The way he sings about it is both poetic and mysterious, with the final question “Who will hear what I say?” making everything seem even more lonesome.
“Know” is the simplest song to grasp, yet it’s also one of the most creative. There are no intricate guitar chords in this song, only a simple two-second long bluesy beat that is repeated throughout. He hums to himself for a while in the first half, then cruelly exclaims, “Know that I love you/ Know that I don’t care/ Know that I see you/ Know that I’m not there.” Nothing more has to be said to convey the meaning of these disturbing lyrics. Lines one and three are written from his perspective, whereas lines two and four are written from the perspective of the woman he desires. It’s a stunning way to end an album that appears to tell a single story about Drake’s disillusioned life at the time while also sending him a reminder to keep going because the sun will rise again.
Nick Drake, unfortunately, never saw the sun again. Pink Moon’s early sales were lower than his first two albums, which exacerbated his despair and insomnia. He died of an overdose of his prescription antidepressant on November 25, 1974, at the age of 26.
