Hotaru was involved in a bizarre accident in her father, Professor Souichi Tomoe’s lab, when she was a toddler. Professor Tomoe’s use of an experimental space that he constructed caused a tremendous explosion in the lab when a Daimon named Germatoid arrived. Hotaru was badly hurt, yet he didn’t die. Her father used his forbidden research to convert her into a cyborg in order to keep her alive. During her transformation, an egg from one of the Deathbusters (Mistress 9) was also implanted in her. Hotaru covered herself with long sleeves and dark tights as a result of this. She also appeared to be sick all of the time and had unusual mood swings. When Hotaru eventually went to her father’s school, Mugen Gakuen, she was constantly teased. Along with Usagi, Chibiusa was the one who became her first true friend. Everyone eventually discovered that Hotaru was actually Sailor Saturn, the Senshi of Death and Rebirth, thanks to the Outer Senshi. The Outers planned to kill her because they were afraid of what she would become. Despite the fact that it was a difficult battle, Hotaru rescued the Senshi when a fully awakened Mistress 9 attempted to swallow their spirits and returned the stolen Silver Crystal to Chibiusa. Mistress 9 escaped from her body and she vanished shortly after. The Outer Senshi later discovered she had returned as a reborn newborn, whom they adopted. She and her intelligence didn’t increase at an alarming rate until much later, when she reawakened as Sailor Saturn.
