What month is ideal for trying to conceive?
In North America, couples are most likely to begin trying to conceive in September, but they are most likely to be successful in getting pregnant in late November and early December, especially if they reside in southern US states, according to a groundbreaking study that was published earlier this year in Human Reproduction.
Amelia Wesselink, a postdoctoral associate in epidemiology at the BU School of Public Health, is the study’s lead author. “There are numerous studies that examine seasonal patterns in births, but these studies don’t take into account when couples start trying, how long it takes them to conceive, or how long their pregnancies last, she says.
Wesselink and her colleagues write in their research that “couples may arrange their attempts at conception for a variety of reasons, including employment schedules (for example, more flexible summer hours), comfort (for example, to avoid being pregnant during hot months), or personal choice” (e.g. desiring a fall baby).
The researchers examined data on 14,331 pregnant women who had been trying to conceive for no longer than six months, including 5,827 American and Canadian participants in the Pregnancy Study Online (PRESTO) and 8,504 Danish participants in a similar set of studies at Aarhus University in Denmark, to determine when couples were most likely to conceive.
These studies collect information on everything from menstruation frequency and smoking to food and income to education and intercourse frequency and menstruation through extensive surveys every two months until the women either conceive or have tried to conceive for 12 menstrual cycles.
After taking into consideration the seasonal variations in when couples begin attempting to conceive, Wesselink says, “we found a reduction in the late spring and a surge in the chances of conceiving in the late fall.
It’s interesting to note that the relationship was stronger among married couples.
Additionally, Danes were less likely than North Americans to start attempting to get pregnant in the fall (possibly in the hopes of giving birth when work is less busy in the summer, Wesselink says, which may be more important in the United States than in Scandinavia).
However, after accounting for these trends, North Americans had a 16 percent increase in their chances of getting pregnant in the fall as opposed to the spring, whereas Danes saw only an 8 percent seasonal increase in the fall. The seasonal variation was substantially larger and increased by 45 percent in the southern US states, with a peak in conceptions in late November. In contrast, seasonality had far less of an effect on conception in northern US states, Canada, and Denmark.
After accounting for variables including intercourse frequency, sugar intake, smoking, and medication use that can change during the year and affect the likelihood of conceiving, the results remained essentially same.
Despite the fact that this study is unable to pinpoint the causes of seasonal variation in fertility, Wesselink says, “we are interested in investigating several hypotheses on seasonally varying factors and how they affect fertility, including meteorological variables like temperature and humidity, vitamin D exposure, and environmental exposures like air pollution.
The Danish Medical Research Council and the Eunice K. Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development provided funding for this study.
Do July and August Leos differ from one another?
Although the sun is the sign of Leo’s ruling planet, the majority of Leos born in August are either second or third decan Leos, meaning they have secondary co-ruling planets that affect how strongly their Leo energy manifests. First decan Leos (born in July) are ruled only by the sun, hence they typically exhibit the purest of Leo characteristics. In July Leos, all the positive and negative traits traditionally associated with Leo energy will typically stand out and be more visible, such as drama, inventiveness, confidence, courage, and a strong need for attention.
