The 78 tarot card drawings for The Wild Unknown were created at a drafting table in New York City by an artist using ink and watercolor.

Although I don’t personally know her, after completing the research for this article, I have developed a small amount of a crush on her. Kim Krans is more than just an author, creator, designer, and artist. She advocates for creativity and the drastic transformation that can occur (for both individuals and society) as a result of developing and disseminating original concepts and artistic creations. She does more than just advocate for change; she also exemplifies it, and her spirituality is closely related to her artistic endeavors.

THE PACKAGE & CONTENTS
This is my favorite deck of tarot cards. I’m not even referring about the card designs or the straightforward snakeskin card backs (both of which I love).
I adore the photographic style (which is a very subjective thing). They have a really contemporary and well-balanced feel to them. On the cards, the artist hand-drew a whole rainbow of watercolor washes over hand-drawn black ink linework. The cards are primarily black and white with some rainbow-colored accents.
But this deck’s unique qualities go beyond its artwork. The package and card quality are what really make it stand out.
How well-made the cards are
Amazingly sturdy cardstock with a matte texture. In your hand, the cards appear substantial and hefty. Even a little box is provided so that you may transport the cards without risking damage.
There is just enough information in the accompanying book to keep it interesting but not overpowering. The packing and presentation are excellent, and I would describe them as “gift-quality. Even minute aspects have been carefully considered and improved, such as the ribbons’ weight and the internal printing of the box.
Overall, the presentation, contents, and packaging quality have me very impressed. Here is a “lifetime deck of cards. Years of misuse and abuse are possible due to the cardstock’s weight before you start to notice wear on the cards.
READING TAROT WITH THE WILD UNKNOWN DECK
Although the Wild Unknown Tarot is based on RW, there are some notable variations. These cards only include photographs of animals and the natural world; there are no people at all.
The Strength and Justice cards in the Major Arcana are reversed so that Justice comes first (as the 8) and Strength comes second (as the 11 card). Although it is more customary and conventional to number the cards in this fashion, some people might find it confusing.
Instead of the more typical Page-Knight-Queen-King sequence, the names on the court cards are Daughter-Son-Mother-Father. The fact that they are “matched as Daughter-Son and Mother-Father” makes this feel more contemporary. This draws attention to their “feminine/masculine energies and reduces the hierarchy of males controlling the women among the four court cards.
None of the other cards’ usual RW-based meanings differ noticeably from those of the Wild Unknown Tarot, so if you are familiar with reading a RW-based deck, you should have no trouble deciphering and comprehending The Wild Unknown cards.
The pictures, however, are only abstractions of the conventional meanings. To connect the two, you’ll need to fit certain mental jigsaw pieces together.
Because it made me carefully examine each card and consider how it related to what I already knew about the conventional card meanings, I particularly appreciated this mental puzzle-fitting process. Some of the cards are blatantly smart and cunning, while others simply have drawings that “feel right.” The deck feels like a cozy buddy who is showing you something new; it is difficult but not upsetting.
Even if you have any tarot experience, this is not a simple deck to use. When you first begin using the deck to play, you will need to put some effort into connecting the image of each card with its significance. Although it’s a joy to accomplish with these cards, the process is enjoyable, so prepare to put in some effort.
You will have a lot of trouble using this deck if you aren’t entirely at ease with the conventional RW-based meanings. This deck is not recommended for tarot beginners (unless you enjoy making things difficult)!
USING THE WILD UNKNOWN COMPANION BOOK
A 200+ page companion book is included with The Wild Unknown Box Set. The book has a higher quality feel than typical tarot decks, similar to the rest of the box set. It has a fold-over cover with lovely end pages and a substantial weight to the paper.
Each card is displayed inside the book along with a brief (handwritten) explanation of the card and its significance. The amount of information provided about each card is far less than in most tarot kits, and it doesn’t even attempt to define the card or explain how to interpret it.
The written interpretations, on the other hand, put YOU inside the reading. If you read the tarot for personal growth and self-discovery, this is really useful (like I do). I truly enjoyed this strategy.
The card descriptions, though, are a touch too “woo-woo” for my tastes, but that is entirely personal preference. You will feel more at ease with the descriptions if you are open to more mystical issues because I am very much on the “logical side of the logical-mystical continuum.”
It would have been good to have more teaching and help from the companion book because the cards are so abstract and challenging for beginners to read.
Personally, when learning complex subjects (like tarot), I want a lot of guidance and incremental growth, and this book doesn’t offer either. You’ll be alright with this book if you prefer to be overwhelmed while learning and don’t require that kind of gradual, step-by-step direction. However, the majority of newcomers require more instruction, and this book doesn’t offer too much of it, which is another reason I don’t suggest this deck for tarot newbies.
IS THE WILD UNKNOWN DECK GOOD FOR BEGINNERS?
Regrettably, no. I wouldn’t suggest using this deck as your first deck if you’re just starting to understand tarot.
I wholeheartedly endorse using it as your second deck (or third, or fourth, etc.). It’s one of my favorites, however using this deck alone makes it incredibly challenging to grasp the card meanings.
The stories of the cards are depicted by symbols and images on the more “traditional RW-based tarot decks. When you are first learning and recalling the meanings of the cards, these tales, symbols, and images are helpful.
The Wild Unknown deck includes different symbols and imagery, and its usage of stories can be highly mysterious.
For instance, the Eight of Pentacles (a card about perseverance and mastering one’s craft) depicts a spider in a web. If you are familiar with the card’s significance, this interpretation makes sense and is brilliant. However, it’s challenging to connect the spiderweb image on the card with being a diligent craftsperson if you don’t yet know its significance.
PROS OF THE WILD UNKNOWN TAROT DECK
- The cards and packaging are of really excellent quality.
- The images are elegant, straightforward, and consistent. (This is a personal opinion, but I genuinely adore them.) They experience peace and power.
- The pictures and symbols are just sufficiently different from the RW pictures to get my mind thinking in new ways. The readings I receive from this deck constantly defy my “regular way of thinking” and always seem to originate from outside of myself.
CONS OF THE WILD UNKNOWN TAROT DECK
- If you don’t already have some familiarity with the RW-based meanings, learning and reading the cards from this deck might be very challenging.
- It can be a little challenging to mix the cards because of their matte surface and thick cardboard. This might simply be a personal issue for me because I’m bad at dealing cards in general.
- The deck costs a little bit more than other well-known tarot decks.
Overall, I adore and heartily recommend The Wild Unknown, but not everyone will enjoy this deck.
