The movie’s basic plot is as follows. Tessa, our female heroine, is a bookish, naive college freshman who meets Hardin, a British bad boy with tattoos and a penchant for wearing black T-shirts. He has a grumpy personality. He’s friends with her roommate, Steph, who has pink hair, wears crop tops, and listens to rock music, so you can tell she’s rebellious.
Hardin is an objectively bad character in the novel. When they read “After,” everyone understands. The absurdity and drama are what make the terrible writing and cringe-worthy plot line palatable. The relationship between Hardin and Tessa is completely emotionally abusive, with him manipulating and gaslighting her throughout the book.
As a result, it’s understandable that the filmmakers would want to make Hardin less of a bad guy in the film. But the difficulty is that if Hardin isn’t a bad guy, the movie doesn’t have much of a plot.
For about 15 minutes of the movie, Hardin is unpleasant to Tessa. The film rushes over the development of their tumultuous relationship, making their unexpected profound connection feel rushed and strange. They interact twice and then “can’t seem to keep away from each other.”
Hardin isn’t nearly cruel or rebellious enough, which makes you wonder why Tessa is so adamant about being with him in the first place.
While the film tries to make Hardin more pleasant and less abusive, I’d rather the film retain Hardin’s character the same and have Tessa stand up for herself and recognize her worth. Instead, it devolves into another another corny romantic comedy.
Because the picture is PG-13, there aren’t many sex scenes, which account for at least a fourth of the novel. This is strange because the movie’s ads depicted it as a story of a young woman’s sexual awakening.
It’s not like a movie needs sex scenes, but the novel has been compared to “50 Shades of Grey,” which is also problematic. The book’s whole plot revolved around Tessa losing her virginity.
The film as a whole is overly reliant on cliches, and the audience frequently bursts out laughing at serious scenes. I had to look away from the screen because lines like “You don’t ever have to cover up for me” made me squirm so much.
To make Hardin look like a better boyfriend, the movie inserted some moments that were not in the novel. After all, throughout the book, he and Tessa do nothing but bicker and have sex. In a traditional romance movie montage, they sneak into a library after dark, visit an aquarium, soak in a clawfoot tub, and gallop around campus.
There’s one extra scene that’s so strange it’s creepy. Hardin comes up behind Tessa’s seat in the dark as she’s at an astronomy observatory for class and whispers in her ear the weirdest line ever: “What are you doing, Tessa?” Are you interested in learning about the stars?

In the book, Hardin coerces Tessa into signing a lease with him after three months of dating in order for her to be unable to leave him. After her mother cuts her off for dating him, he instead offers to let Tessa stay with him at a family friend’s apartment, which he is house-sitting. That’s a step in the right direction, but Tessa, go live in your dorm like a normal student.
The ending is the most significant change in the film. Tessa discovers a devastating betrayal from HarryI mean Hardin at the end of the book. Hardin made a bet with his edgy buddies that he could get Tessa’s virginity, which he did. He also kept the bloodied sheets from the crime scene to show his friends, which is alarming.
In the film, the dare is toned down a notch, with Hardin’s goal being to have Tessa fall in love with him instead. That’s still messed up, but it’s less severe and cliched. It takes away a lot of the suspense from his betrayal’s disclosure.
While the book ends with Tessa leaving Hardin (though she returns after two weeks in the next book), the film has him apologize to her in the strangest way possible.

Should you go see “After?” Yes, because it’s so horribly awful and cringe-worthy that you just have to see it for yourself. Is this a decent film? No, it’s a disaster. You will, however, get a good laugh and see a movie that is literally based on a One Direction fanfiction.
