But now that I’m older, having studied the original material and seen the narrative for what it is, it’s imperative that we face the following realities: Not even close to becoming the ideal romantic lead, Noah Calhoun. In both the novel and the movie adaptation of The Notebook, he is a toxic, risky, and emotionally abusive love interest. The Notebook is just one of numerous instances of romance book “heroes” that actually assault, mistreat, or stalk the heroine. It is past due to have a conversation about them.
