Athena is the goddess of wisdom, and unlike Sparta, the city of Athens was the epicenter of the ancient world’s intellectual activity. Athens produced many great Greek philosophers and thinkers.
But why is Athena a virgin or a Virgo? According to one of the legends, she murdered her father after he attempted to rape her. According to another legend, Hephaestus attempted but failed to marry her. Aphrodite, the goddess of love, opposes Athens. It’s worth noting that ancient Greek mythology isn’t a unified system; myths often tell the same story in multiple ways, or even contradict one another. Although some traditions mention Athena’s children, the name of her primary temple in Athens, the Parthenon, emphasizes her purity.
