Has Hanako ever had a lover?
Hanako and Nene enjoy a dependable and compassionate bond. Hanako made Nene his assistant in exchange for fulfilling her wish when the mermaid scale intertwined their destiny. Since then, she has been cleaning the restroom after school. She grumbles about having to do it and tells Hanako that she dislikes it, but Hanako responds by saying he looks forward to it every day. He describes how it makes him feel happy and that he has a friend. For the first time, Nene addresses him as Hanako-kun rather than Hanako-san to make their relationship appear more casual.

After destroying Tsuchigomori’s yorishiro, memories were retrieved that allowed her to discover more about Amane. This increased her concern for Hanako and his past. Nene then admits to Hanako that she finds her friend to be “more hassle than it’s worth,” but she still decides to stay with him. He thanked Nene in the following chapter, informing her that it was the first time a girl had expressed interest in him and disclosing a little more about his past. Finally, he opened up to her about his background. Nene ponders how Hanako might have had a bright future, and Hanako hopes for the same for her. They may have one of the most reliable friendships in the entire series.
He says he will tell her more in the future, and they made a pinky promise for her to stay as his assistant until that time comes. This may be because he is afraid she will find out more or because he is not ready to tell her. Hanako’s acts toward Nene, despite his believing there was nothing he could do about it, may now be more easily understood as his means of showing care for her after the revelation of Nene’s brief lifespan.
Nene is shocked to see him as a human, rather than an apparition, when Hanako joins her class in the Picture Perfect arc. Despite evidence that he was a human, she goes to great lengths to determine if he is indeed a human. When Hanako finally asks her if she likes him, Nene responds emphatically in the affirmative, proving that she definitely feel a romantic attraction to Hanako.
It is confirmed twice: once when Hanako asks her whether she likes the boy who “looks like him” (referring to Hanako) when they go to the roof to view the stars, and again when he asks her later, while they are out in the town. She doesn’t really respond to this one, merely exclaiming, “You want me to repeat it!?” and blushing hysterically. The author has provided a side drawing of the scenario where she admits her actual love for Hanako.
In the last arc, when Akane tried to kiss her in the elevator to get Hanako to aid him, Hanako panicked and rushed in, covering Akane’s mouth with his hand and Nene’s as well. He tells Akane that what he had done wasn’t fair before grabbing her and running off.

This attracts attention to the tag that is on Hanako’s cheeks. He sealed Kou’s staff with a tag following their altercation with Hanako. White is the same color as Hanako’s tag and the tag that was used to block the staff’s power. This indicates that the seal in his cheeks is what is being used to restrain Hanako’s immense power. This also explains why, despite the fact that apparitions could easily fulfill Yashiro’s longing for love with the snap of a finger, Hanako was unable to do so (aka the Confession Tree). Nene becomes suspicious that he has affections for her after hearing him say that he wants to give her life by his own hand. To force him to admit it out loud, she plays the fool. Nene panics, believing that she misinterpreted Hanako’s genuine motivations, just as she did at the confession tree, when Hanako refuses to comply. Hanako holds her and stops her in her tracks during her terror, telling her he never intended to see her again but was glad he did. They end up kissing, confirming their affections for one another, after he slowly leans against her.
