Eren is unable to follow orders when soldiers keep dying while attempting to repel the Titan, despite Petra’s pleas for him to believe them and back off.
Eren ultimately decides to follow the squad, and just as the Titan is about to catch up with them, they arrive at the position of Erwin and the other troops, whomuch to Petra and the squad’s surprisemanage to capture the Female Titan. They then boast to Eren that they were able to capture their enemy because of the might of the Survey Corps.
The Special Operations Squad is then instructed to wait while efforts are made to catch the human within the Female Titan as they ascend to one of the enormous trees. They talk about Erwin’s choice to keep the plan a secret from the soldiers. Petra and Oluo get upset when Eren questions why not even the elite soldiers were informed about it, but Eld agrees with him and says Erwin had to have a reason. They understand that they would have likely been trusted enough to be given access to the plan if they had responded to Erwin’s puzzling inquiry at the time.
The group then starts to escape back to their horses when a flare takes them in the wrong direction. Then, after being assaulted by an unidentified assailant who kills Gunther, they change back into their Titan form. The remaining squad members fight the Titan as Eren is told to retreat. The Female Titan is initially in the lead because Petra and the others blind her with the gas from the vertical maneuvering gear and cripple both of her arms, rendering them useless.
But when Petra and Eld Jinn close in for the kill, the Titan unexpectedly regenerates one eye, showcasing a never-before-seen capacity to concentrate healing onto fewer bodily parts in order to speed up the regenerative process as a defensive mechanism, and bites Eld in half, killing him.
Petra is unable to respond in time to the Female Titan’s kick because she is paralyzed from shock and despite Oluo’s pleadings, she is splattered against a tree and her spine is broken. When Levi finds the Female Titan, he observes her corpse with a silent face.
