Despite his efforts to defend her, Hiro is shot in the butt by a gun and is knocked to the ground bleeding.
Their memories are then permanently lost. Hiro quits naming further children after forgetting his pledge to Mitsuru. His aptitude scores are rapidly declining, according to subsequent assessments. Despite this, the grownups continued to treat him differently.
Hiro leaves the Garden at the age of 14, five years later, and is transferred to Plantation 13, where he is paired with Naomi. Naomi and Hiro attempt to link during their capacity test, but their positive pulse and P-Factor drop and they time out, causing them to fail. Although Hiro is invited to stay because he is a unique specimen, they are required to return to the Garden per protocol. He declines out of desperation at not being accepted as a parasite, though.
