Simply defined, the North Node is a symbol for the energy we are entering. It’s a new site for us, expressing our hesitation in achieving our objectives. The South Node indicates former life feelings that we’re still struggling with, as well as behaviors and feelings that are simple to fall back on because they’re comfortable. Finding a balance between these two conflicting forces is difficult, yet it is required to fulfill both sides of our karmic destiny.

NODES BASICS
Despite the fact that we know our solar system is heliocentric, with all planets orbiting the sun, most of conventional astrology is based on the geocentric notion, which places the earth, and hence us, at the center of the cosmic drama. As a result, the ecliptic, or the presumed orbital path of the sun as seen from Earth, is given its own computed field, much like a sonar in old submarine movies. In the meantime, the moon, which orbits the earth, follows its own course, which is inclined from the ecliptic. Nodes are the sites on an axis where the two fields meet, with one junction at the northern and one at the southern latitudes. If this seems a little strange, it’s because it is. Nodes are not visible in the same way that planets are. They symbolize sites of intersection and collision, as well as the opening and closing of gates.
The nodes move retrograde, or backwards, through the signs, taking roughly 18.5 years to complete a revolution. They spend around a year and a half in direct opposition to one another. The north node retrograded into Taurus in January 2022, while the south node entered Scorpio, where they will stay until July 2023, when Aries and Libra take their turn. As a result, all eclipses in 2022 will occur in the Taurus-Scorpio constellation (more on that later).
NODES SYMBOLISM
The nodes symbolize various poles of consciousness: the north represents destiny, future, and imminence, while the south processes what we already know. Demetra George recounts the mythological ascriptions of meaning to the nodes, which are frequently referred to as the Dragon’s Head (north) and Dragon’s Tail (south), in Astrology and the Authentic Self (south). The hero Marduk destroys the dragon Tiamat, whose head and tail afterwards formed the upper and lower hemispheres of the world, according to the ancient Babylonian creation myth. In Hindu mythology, a world dragon with the head of Rahu and the tail of Ketu appears.
As a result, the north node points us in the direction of Rahu, also known as the Dragon’s Head. In this lifetime, what does it desire to consume? The north node, in general, symbolizes where you’re headed, what you’re looking for, and where your higher destiny is. Meanwhile, Ketu, also known as the dragon’s tail, digests, processes, and releases what we already know. Steven Forrest states in The Book of the Moon that the south node “carries the essence of prior-life karma that has ripened for you in this incarnation.” As a result, your south node does not always represent lower consciousness, but rather that which you already know and are ready to fulfill. This could refer to your natural abilities, talents, or interpersonal dynamics, which don’t necessarily provide something new. Johnny Cammareri presumably resonates by the south node for Cher in Moonstruck, while his brother Ronny, like it or not, vibrates by the north node, and the gates to Loretta’s fate.
NODES AND ECLIPSES
Though the moon and sun collide on a monthly basis during new and full moons, they only collide at the nodes once every six months. Enter eclipses, which can only happen at a new or full moon when the moon is also conjoined to one of the lunar nodes, according to George. Eclipses align the sun, moon, and earth because the nodes represent the crossings of many orbits. Solar eclipses occur when the moon passes in front of the sun, blocking the sun’s light from our view. On a full moon, a lunar eclipse occurs when the earth conceals the moon’s reflecting light.
As a result, eclipses represent a sudden and strange fight between the sun and the moon, with the earth directly in the balance. The nodes indicate the collective and personal consciousness’s direction and movement forward. The themes of their respective polarizing signs are activated as the two most direct heavenly bodies hit the nodes, unleashing shadows and revelations long hidden.
THE NODES IN 2022
The north node goes through Taurus from January 2022 to July 2023, with the south node in Scorpio. Taurus is the sign of possession, self-esteem, and personal worth, as well as the sign of form and embodiment. The Appollonian discourse is ruled by the bull, in which we can create our own aesthetic and symbolic meaning. Scorpio is a sign tuned into the primal powers and interactions that define us, and it burns away the self and plunges it into the abyss; into the Dionysian, animalistic, and transforming truths.

However, as the north node enters Taurus, we are asked to regroup after the damage. Scorpio and its ruling planets, Mars and Pluto, complete the necessary destructive karmic task. Taurus’ ruler, Venus, is the goddess of fertility. It’s time to put everything together and make something new. How do you want to shape your sense of self-worth and identity? The north node of Taurus acts as a counterbalance to the prevalent assumption that the world is doomed. Instead, it invites us to concentrate on re-building it, beginning with our own domain: What are your plans for making money? How much are you worth? What are your emotional and physical integrity standards?
A partial new moon solar eclipse in Taurus on April 30 and a full moon total lunar eclipse in Scorpio on May 16 make up the first eclipse wave. These two will break any final seals in your personal hellmouth, revealing the ways you’ve bought into power hierarchies in your family, career, social, or romantic lives. Any long-held score, whether by the body or elsewhere, is supposed to expose and address self-worth imbalances. According to intuitive astrologer and healer Rachel Lang, your north node represents your true north or North Star. “It’s the turning point in your life that you keep following. You’ll feel more fulfilled and purposeful if you focus your attention on following the north node’s pathbut it’s not simple. It’s the point where you’ve gone beyond your comfort zone “she explains.
This node in the sky marks the intersection of the moon’s orbit with the northern ecliptic hemisphere at the moment of your birth. “It’s not apparent like other astrological points, but that doesn’t mean it’s not important,” explains Lang. So, for example, my north node is in Gemini, which suggests that my “mission” in life is to teach, learn, write, and propagate a particular message.

Of course, the journey to destiny must begin someplace, and Lang claims that your south node is that place. The south node is located exactly 180 degrees south of the north node and signifies the start of your karmic path. What exactly is a nodal return?
Many clients inquire if there is such a thing as “Soul Purpose Astrology.” And I enthusiastically respond that (among other things!) it is the duty of the Lunar Nodes.
The Lunar Nodes, also known as our North and South Nodes, are mathematically calculated positions on our birth chart that are precisely opposite one other.
The nodes are points in space where two separate orbits intersect: the Moon’s orbit around the Earth and the Sun’s apparent orbit around the Earth. The north node and the south node are located where these two orbital paths intersect.
The ‘true’ node and the’mean’ node are two different types of nodes. The movements of the true nodes are the actual transits of the nodes, whereas the transits of the mean nodes are based on an average. The real node is what I use.
They go through each zodiac sign every 18 months and require 18.5 years to complete a full round. This means that every 18.5 years, we will have a ‘nodal return,’ in which the nodes will return to the same sign and degree as when we were born, and this can be a highly fortunate period.
The Lunar Nodes provide a wealth of information for us in terms of connecting with our soul purpose and living our best lives, as well as understanding our karmic lessons and why we might go back into old habits or be hesitant to step into our power.
Because the lunar nodes are based on the concepts of past lifetimes and karma, you’ll need to believe in these concepts to completely apply soul purpose astrology to your chart and life. However, I will not go into detail about analyzing past lives with your south node in this blog.
