On March 10, Roode and Aries successfully defended their title for the first time at Lockdown, defeating Bad Influence (Christopher Daniels and Kazarian) as well as Chavo Guerrero Jr. and Hernandez in a three-way match. On June 2, at Slammiversary XI, Aries and Roode were given another chance at Guerrero and Hernandez’s belts in a fatal four-way elimination match won by Gunner and James Storm.
Aries defeated Eric Young on the June 13 edition of Impact Wrestling to qualify for the 2013 Bound for Glory Series. The following week, Aries earned seven points in the tournament by pinfalling Jay Bradley in his first BFG series bout. Aries defeated Chris Sabin and Kenny King to win his second X Division Championship on the June 27 episode of Impact Wrestling as Suicide. After Hulk Hogan uncovered the real Suicide and demanded that the phony Suicide unmask, Aries revealed himself at the close of the program and said that he would trade the X Division Championship for a World Heavyweight Championship showdown at Destination X. However, Aries lost the X Division Championship to Sabin the next week in a three-way match that included the real Suicide, now known as Manik. After praising AJ Styles on the August 1 edition of Impact Wrestling, Aries turned face once more before being interrupted by his former tag team teammate Bobby Rhode. Aries defeated Sabin to capture the X-Division Championship for the third time on the December 12 episode of Impact Wrestling. “I was afraid my first few of years there. I was wrestling with legends like Samoa Joe, CM Punk, and Bryan Danielson. Because my school had closed, there was still training that I needed to finish. There were still many things I didn’t understand. I found that I wasn’t coming up with any ideas until I sat down with a wrestler. Because I wasn’t very good, they would set everything out for me. Someone may have believed I could hang here somewhere along the way, but I can’t, and I’m being exposed at every turn, and it’s only a matter of time before someone asks, “Hey, what are you doing here?” and kicks me out. That’s how I spent the first three or four years of my Ring of Honor career.”
“Cornrows have been a part of my hairstyle for about 13 years. Cornrows are attractive at first, but after a given amount of time, they begin to pull your hair out. I began to bald as a result of the cornrows and my father’s genetics, or a combo of both. The braids on the sides would appear to be very full, but the braids on the top would appear to be quite thin. I actually didn’t, but I remember getting my hair braided one day and thinking to myself, “Not only does it hurt, but it’s getting unpleasant because there’s so little in the middle.” ‘I can add false hair on it,’ my sister once offered. I thought to myself, “I suppose I need to cut it.” It now appeals to me. When it originally happened, I wasn’t very fond of it. It took some getting used to. I had to get my hair redone every week when I had the braids since I was wrestling so much. Consider that for a moment. Every week for the past 13 years, you’ve had to sit on your butt so your sister can braid your hair, which takes about three or four hours since she needs to undo, wash, and repeat it.”
Is Ring of Honor officially over?
Rhodes, the Bucks, and numerous more stars departed the organization in early 2019 to form their own promotion, All Elite Wrestling (AEW). Many wrestling journalists and commentators see the departure of Ring of Honor’s top talent for AEW as the start of the promotion’s collapse in 2019. Much of the criticism was directed at then-ROH World Champion Matt Taven’s reign. That year, ROH had fewer PPV buys and lower live show attendance. ROH’s average live concert attendance in 2019 was 1,082, according to Dave Meltzer, which was lower than in 2018 and 2017. Joey Mercury, a ROH producer/road agent, resigned in protest in October 2019, citing a lack of creative direction as well as the lack of a concussion policy for wrestlers. ROH permitted then-Women of Honor champion Kelly Klein to wrestle after she suffered a concussion during an October 26, 2019 event, according to Mercury. Klein sought medical help after experiencing symptoms of post-concussion syndrome. Her contract would expire in December and she would not be booked for the rest of the year.
Ring of Honor re-signed Marty Scurll in January 2020, reportedly the most lucrative deal in ROH history. Scurll was promoted to lead booker with longtime booker Hunter “Delirious” Johnston, in addition to being a wrestler. Scurll’s contract permitted him to continue to wrestle in New Japan Pro-Wrestling and the National Wrestling Alliance, where he started a cross-promotional feud with NWA World Heavyweight Champion Nick Aldis. During the Speaking Out Movement, however, Scurll was accused of taking advantage of an inebriated 16-year-old girl. Scurll would issue two comments, none of which denied the claims but maintained the interaction was consensual. The promotion confirmed on June 25 that they had begun an investigation into the claims, and Scurll was fired as a booker. Marty Scurll was no longer under contract with Ring of Honor by January 2021, after the two companies mutually agreed to split ways.
Ring of Honor announced the revival of the ROH Pure Championship on January 31, 2020, along with a tournament to crown the first Pure champion since 2006. Following the deactivation of the Women of Honor World Championship belt, the promotion announced another tournament to crown a new ROH Women’s World Champion the following month. However, beginning in March, Ring of Honor will postpone live performances in reaction to the 2020 COVID-19 epidemic.
Ring of Honor Wrestling’s television tapings would continue in August at the Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena (previously known as the UMBC Event Center) in Maryland, but without fans in attendance. On September 12, new episodes would begin airing in syndication, with a new format and the start of the Pure title competition. Ring of Honor stated on October 27, 2021 that it would take a break after Final Battle in December, with a possible return date of April 2022.
