What is the reason behind the Colorado Belle’s closure?
In 1979, Advanced Patent Technology, a slot machine manufacturer and slot route operator, revealed intentions to establish a hotel and casino, with Ramada managing the hotel. The casino debuted on November 10, 1980, after construction began in October as a joint venture with John Fulton, a Southern California restaurant.
A preliminary agreement was signed in 1983 to sell the casino for $1.6 million to a company led by attorney William Morris and Circus Circus Enterprises executives William Bennett and William Pennington, but Morris pulled out a month later. Circus Circus purchased the casino for $4 million the next year, with plans to relocate it to make place for an expansion of its Edgewater Hotel and Casino.
The plans for Colorado Belle were presented in 1985, and the $80 million attraction debuted on July 1, 1987.
In 1999, Circus Circus Enterprises changed its name to Mandalay Resort Group, which was ultimately purchased by MGM Mirage in 2005.
In June 2007, MGM Mirage sold the Colorado Belle and the Edgewater for a total of $200 million to Anthony Marnell III and Sher Gaming.
Golden Entertainment paid $190 million buying the Colorado Belle and the Edgewater from Marnell and Sher in January 2019.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak ordered the Colorado Belle to close on March 17, 2020, to prevent the virus from spreading further. Due to the economic impact of business closures and market uncertainties, Golden Entertainment stated on May 18, 2020 that the Colorado Belle will remain closed indefinitely. Around 400 employees were put off, while some may be able to find work at Golden Entertainment’s other casinos, such as the Edgewater and Aquarius Casino Resort.
“I didn’t have an update on the status of the Colorado Belle,” said the general manager of Golden Entertainment’s Laughlin hotels in February 2022.

Is Laughlin on its way out?
When Gov. Steve Sisolak allows gaming properties to begin business in Nevada, the Colorado Belle, a Laughlin casino that mimics a 19th century paddlewheel riverboat, says it will not return. Last Thursday, 400 employees were laid off from the casino that floats on the Colorado River.
The Colorado Belle’s parent firm, Golden Entertainment Inc., cited the uncertainty of tourism returning after Sisolak ordered all non-essential companies, including casinos, to close on March 17, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
“In a letter to employees, Katherine Roden, Golden’s vice president of human resources, wrote, “We expect reduced business levels that will endure for an unknown amount of time.” “Due to these difficult circumstances, the firm has no immediate intentions to reopen the Colorado Belle, and the current layoffs will continue forever.”
Pints Sports Bar, Loading Dock Bar & Grill, and Big Easy Deli, as well as two bars, are all located within the casino.
Golden also owns and operates Laughlin’s Edgewater and Aquarius, as well as PT’s and Sierra Gold pubs around the state.
