Astronomers may occasionally break the “shattering news” that horoscopes are no longer reliable since the constellations have moved. Here’s an interesting bit of clarification between astronomy and astrology.
Although the real constellations have changed over time, modern Western astrology uses a system known as the Tropical Zodiac, which employs “fake” constellations. Ptolemy, a famous mathematician and astronomer/astrologer, invented the Tropical Zodiac in second-century Alexandria.
Western astrology is based on the apparent course of the Sun as seen from our vantage point on earth, rather than the movement of visible stars and constellations. (We say “apparent” because, obviously, the Earth revolves around the Sun.)
Astrologers have created 12 static zones within the Tropical zodiac’s round course (like 12 equal pieces of a pie). Astrologers use these zones to follow the Sun’s (and other planets’) motions. Ptolemy designated each zodiac zone after 12 of the 88 known constellations (which have since shiftedbut this has no bearing on your zodiac sign!). We go through a zodiac sign cycle every 30 days when the Sun passes through each zone (e.g., Aries season, Libra season, Cancer season).
The Tropical Zodiac is unaffected by shifts in the Earth’s axis since it is fixed. Every year, it begins when the Sun enters the Aries portion of the zodiac band, which is determined by the Sun’s position at the spring equinox on March 21. On June 21, the summer solstice occurs when the Sun aligns with the Tropic of Cancer. The winter solstice occurs on or around December 21, when the Sun reaches the Tropic of Capricorn.
So there you have it, Bill Nye and all the other “science-guy” skeptics who are joyously claiming to be debunking astrology when they aren’t. Haters of horoscopes, take a step to the left!
