In Zodiac Netflix, who was the Zodiac killer?

In 2007, David Fincher’s film Zodiac was released to the general public, reigniting true-crime fans’ interest in one of the most notorious serial murderer cases in history. The film is based on Robert Graysmith’s (Jake Gyllenhaal) non-fiction book of the same name, published in 1986. Graysmith was a political cartoonist who believed the Zodiac Killer was a guy called Arthur Leigh Allen (John Carroll Lynch). During the late 1960s and early 1970s, the Zodiac Killer tormented the San Francisco Bay Area, teasing police with letters, bloodstained clothing, and ciphers delivered to newspapers. Because his DNA didn’t match vital evidence left by the killer, Arthur Leigh Allen was finally vindicated, and the case became one of the most prominent unsolved cases in the United States…until now. The identity of the prolific serial murderer has purportedly been revealed by a group of independent detectives who have spent years working on the case.

The identity of the Zodiac Killer has been revealed to be Gary Francis Poste, according to a group of independent investigators known as the Case Breakers. According to the Case Breakers, throughout his reign of terror, Poste not only eluded investigators in Northern California, but he also got away with another suspected murder hundreds of miles distant, which has linked him to the Zodiac Killer’s atrocities. If you’re a true crime junkie like me and were hoping to learn more from Poste about these allegations, you’ll be disappointed to learn that he died in 2018 from sepsis, septic shock, dysphagia, and vascular dementia, according to his death certificate obtained by the Associated Press “TMZ is a television network. It’s difficult to examine him about the allegations, let alone charge him with a crime, now that he’s dead.

Based on clues unearthed during their independent investigation, the Case Breakers, a group of more than 40 former law enforcement investigators, journalists, and military intelligence personnel, are confident in naming Poste as the Zodiac Killer. Years of forensic evidence and images from Poste’s darkroom were combed through during the investigation. Poste’s scars on his forehead appear to match those on a police sketch of the Zodiac Killer, according to another photograph. You can see a side-by-side comparison of those photographs down below!

Other indications, according to Jen Bucholtz, a former Army counterintelligence agent, point to Poste being the famed killer and come straight from the Zodiac Killer’s writings. Bucholtz claims that when the letters of Poste’s complete name are removed, it reveals an additional message that had previously been undeciphered by law authorities. To locate the secret message, detectives would need to know the name in question, which explains why they have failed in the past.

On October 31, 1966, the Case Breakers believe Poste committed another unsolved murder. Cheri Jo Bates was assassinated in Riverside, California, hundreds of miles from the San Francisco area tormented by the Zodiac Killer. The following year, the cops received a handwritten note believed to have been sent by the killer. It should be noted that the letter did not come from the perpetrator, and authorities in the case do not believe the case is linked to the Zodiac murders. The following is what they said in their statement:

“Cheri Jo Bates’ murder in 1966 was judged to be unrelated to the Zodiac killer by our Homicide Cold Case Unit. We recognize the public’s fascination with these unsolved murders, but all questions about the Zodiac Killer should be sent to the FBI. The Cheri Jo Bates case is still under investigation, and we are unable to provide any additional information at this time.

The San Francisco Police Department has remained silent on Gary Francis Poste’s alleged role as the Zodiac Killer. They said they can’t discuss any potential suspects because the inquiry is still ongoing. The claim that Poste is the Zodiac Killer has yet to be confirmed by law authorities.

In the case of Poste, assuming he is the Zodiac Killer, he led a relatively ordinary existence. Poste was married, worked as a house painter, and served in the military. If he is the killer, this isn’t unusual given many notable serial killers have been known to live very normal lives outside of their secret lives as murderers.

Some people disagree with the Case Breakers’ assertions that Poste is the Zodiac Killer. According to “TMZ,” Riverside PD’s PIO, Ryan Railsback, the Case Breakers base their conclusion on the 1966 murder of Cheri Jo Bates and information the group claims it got from analyzing the file. Railsback claims that their early suspicions that the Zodiac was to blame, based on letters they received at the time, were only a red herring and not worth investigating further. They believe that if there was a compelling cause to do so, they would have done so.

Enter Frank Falzon, a former murder inspector with the San Francisco Police Department who was formerly colleagues with the legendary Dave Toschi, who was in command of the Zodiac case in its early days. When Toschi quit the case, Falzon took over the file, and he believes Poste isn’t their man. According to Falzon, Poste’s name never came up as a strong prospective suspect among the hundreds of names they had on file, as far as he recalls. Toschi was convinced that Arthur Leigh Allen was the Zodiac Killer, however as previously stated, Allen was vindicated due to DNA evidence.

If anything, I hope that this raises awareness of Fincher’s Zodiac, which is one of his best pictures. Despite positive reviews, Zodiac only made $33 million domestically on a $65 million budget, despite grossing $84 million abroad. It’s a film that delivers gut-wrenching fear scene by scene, but it’s not a straight-up serial killer thriller, which I believe is why it didn’t immediately appeal to popular audiences. With a cast that includes Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Brian Cox, Anthony Edwards, Donal Logue, and others, there’s no better time than now to rediscover this modern-day classic, especially now that the Zodiac is back in the news.
