Exaltations are one of the oldest and most widely used astrological components.
They have been utilized in ancient Mesopotamian astrology since before the zodiac was known to exist (using reference to constellation positions which shows correspondence with those later attributed to zodiac degrees). According to Francesca Rochberg, the system’s roots may date back to the second millennium BCE, as it is found in the Enuma anu enlil tradition. Joanne Conman argues that the ancient Egyptians revered specific decan stars in the Middle Kingdom. The “places of mystery” mentioned by Rochberg in later Babylonian astrological literature appear to be derived from the Coffin Texts, as are the analogous planetary exaltations or hypsomata in Hellenistic astrology. Attested Babylonian astrological texts predate the coffin texts. Four of the planets’ exaltation patterns coincide and appear to account for the pattern of the honored decans.
Western astrologers are baffled as to why the Babylonians thought these positions were dignified. Although many theories have been proposed over the ages, there are still anomalies that are practically impossible to explain with any consistency, such as the exaltation of energetic Mars in chilly Capricorn, as Robert Hand has pointed out. The planets all rose heliacally at these degrees in the year of the creation of an important temple to the Babylonian god Nabu in the year 786 BC, according to Western sidereal astrologer Cyril Fagan, although this is still hypothetical.
Since aspects were commonly recognized from sign to sign in Hellenistic astrology, it’s unclear whether a planet’s distance from the exact degree of exaltation had much impact.

Following the discovery of the three outer planetsUranus, Neptune, and Plutoastrologers theorized about the planets’ putative domicile and exaltation rulerships.
For example, it was believed that Neptune was the “real” domicile ruler of Pisces, so usurping one of Jupiter’s two domicile rulerships. It’s impossible to include new, undiscovered planets in standard procedures since the old system was intricate and symmetrical, leaving no room for them. As a result, most modern astrologers have given up trying to assign exaltations to these additional planets.
The concept of exaltation in traditional Hindu astrology was based mostly on the celestial constellations, also known as Nakshatras, in which the planet was located. Furthermore, each Nakshatra is divided into four portions, also known as pda, which results in a precise arc of 320 per pda when 1320/4 is used. The four pda stand for Dharma, Artha, Kma, and Moka, which are the four purposes of life according to Vedic tradition. Although Jupiter is strongly exalted in Pushya, Jupiter might be in one of four pda inside the 1320 arc of Pushya: Dharma pda (320-640 Cancer), Artha pda (640-1000 Cancer), Kma pda (1000-1320 Cancer), and Moka pda (1000-1320 Cancer) (1320-1640 Cancer). Jupiter is exalted in Cancer at 5 degrees. This denotes “deep” exaltation in the core of the Dharma pda of Pushya Nakshatra in the sign of Cancer, which explains Jupiter’s exaltation degree astronomically. When Jupiter is in Cancer (which represents the heart), and is influenced by Bhaspati (the Gods’ teacher), and is driven toward righteous behavior (Dharma pda), Jupiter is operating in 100 percent exaltation, in terms of all Jupiter represents.
