Assume someone has a 20 Virgo Ascendant, a 4 Aries Moon, and a 17 Aquarius Sun. A 20 Virgo Ascendant corresponds to a 20 Pisces Descendant. This is a night birth because the Sun is between the Ascendant and the Descendant, so we employ the night birth formula.
Because this is greater than 360, we deduct 360 from the total. 483 minus 360 equals 123. The Fortune Number is 3 Leo.
The chart would be a day birth if the Sun was at 9 Cancer with this Ascendant and Moon, thus we’d apply the Day formula.
We don’t need to do anything else because this is less than 360. This gives us a Gemini Part of Fortune of 15.
The majority of people born at night have been assigned the incorrect Part of Fortune since most current authorities have used the day formula to night births! This is because Ptolemy, an old authority, seemed to suggest using the day formula for all charts. Our fresh translation of Ptolemy and his ancient interpreters have convinced us that this was not his intention. Most other ancient authors, as well as medieval astrologers, supported utilizing the day formula for day births and the night formula for night births. And these individuals know how to use the Part of Fortune.
To wrap up this note, I’ll give a quick rundown of what the Part of Fortune is. The term “Part of Fortune” is used to explain how one individual is physically connected to the rest of the world. As I previously stated, the Part of Fortune is a main indicator of wealth, but it is much more. It is made up of the Sun’s, Moon’s, and Ascendant’s longitudes, and so is made up of three of the most important points in the chart (only the Midheaven outside of these three is as important), and thus becomes as important as they are. In modern astrology, the Part of Fortune is often dismissed as a minor aspect of the chart, although this was not the case in ancient astrology.
The Ascendant is the fundamental determinant of the physical body and health in traditional astrology. The Moon is also a vital secondary indicator of the body’s health. However, there is a distinction between them. The Ascendant was thought to be the tangible, material aspect of the body. The Moon represented a living part of the body, a soul incarnated in a physical form. The Part of Fortune, which is made up of both of these elements as well as the Sun, is also a reflection of the native’s living, physical body and its interactions with the physical and social world. Its ability to represent wealth stems from this. If the native’s Part of Fortune is in good shape, the native’s relationship with the physical and social world in which he or she lives is one of support and ability to live well. When the native’s Part of Fortune is in bad shape, he or she has a tougher time maintaining a positive relationship with the world. The same can be said regarding the Part of Fortune’s relationship with health.
However, it is important to remember that no one meaning in the chart, including the Part of Fortune, may be used as a complete indicator of any aspect of life. The Ascendant and its ruler, as well as the Moon and its ruler, must all be considered when it comes to one’s health. Indicators of illness and death, the sixth and eighth houses, respectively, give significant implications for health. The second and tenth houses, as well as their rulers, should be considered for material prosperity.
However, the Part of Fortune is well-placed when benefics or dignified planets are in the same sign as it (the fact that “sign” is used here is significant, as will be seen later), or when these planets aspect the Part of Fortune.
It was also claimed that being in a sign ruled by benefics aided the Part of Fortune, and being in a sign ruled by a dignified planet aided any point in a chart.
If the Part of Fortune is in a sign with malefics, especially if the malefics are debilitated, it is not a good indication. Malefic squares, oppositions, and conjunctions are also thought to be unfavorable. As a modern astrologer, I’d have to remark that such signs don’t necessarily indicate poverty or poor health; rather, they indicate that the native will have to work harder or that the native’s options for success would be limited. However, even with those two factors in mind, the outcome can still be very beneficial.
Let me say at the end of this installment that the Part of Fortune is not simply a point like the planets or nodes. It’s the start of a home automation system. The first house of the Fortuna system extends from 0 degrees to 30 degrees of the sign in which the Part of Fortune is located, and the first house of the Fortuna system extends from 0 degrees to 30 degrees of the sign in which the Part is located. The remaining houses of the Fortuna system extend from 0 degrees to 30 degrees of their respective signs as well. In the following episode, I’ll explain what the ancients recommended for these structures.
A planet that generates results that are typically regarded as favorable or “good.” Only time will tell whether these outcomes are truly beneficial to the indigenous people. In most cases, benefics are more likely to achieve the intended outcome than malefics (see next entry). Venus, Jupiter, the Sun through trine or sextile aspects, and any planet that is well aspected and dignified are natural benefics (see note).
A planet that does not easily deliver results that are considered “excellent.” Malefics, on the whole, are not so much “evil” as they need more thinking, consciousness, and ability in life management than benefics do in most circumstances. In reality, the two major malefics, Mars and Saturn, are essential for character development and strength. However, if either of these are used without thought, they will have unfavorable outcomes. Mars, Saturn, and the Sun are natural malefics, but only when they are in conjunction.
In the end, a planet’s malefic or benefic nature is determined by a variety of circumstances. Other factors in the chart can turn planets that are naturally one way or the other into their opposite. It’s impossible to believe that Venus and Jupiter will always provide positive outcomes while Saturn and Mars will always bring negative outcomes. This is an ancient categorization that should be used with caution. Finally, I prefer Ptolemy’s description of the terms. A benefic, according to Ptolemy, is a planet whose natural influence encourages moderation and balance. A malefic planet is one whose natural influence causes imbalance and extremes.
In a variety of ways, planets can be dignified (made stronger) or debilitated (weakened). In this post, I mostly use signals to describe dignity and debility. When planets are in signs that they rule or are exalted, they are dignified. When they are in symptoms that are opposing these, they are incapacitated.
