He was fortunate to be near the coast and was not washed away by the strong tide. All of the animals, on the other hand, were already making their way to the opposite side of the river. The cat became enraged and vowed never to trust the rat again.
The rat hopped off the back of the ox and crossed the finish line first as the animals approached the other side of the coast. The first year of the zodiac was named after the cunning and smart rat, with the ox taking second place. After the ox, the tiger came in third. The small bunny was the fourth to arrive. He hopped on stepping stones and floating logs to get to the shore quickly.
“Why didn’t you win the race, Mr. Dragon, when you could fly? The Jade Emperor enquired.
“I stopped to make it rain since the people and animals in the northern region needed it,” the dragon recounted, “and when I returned, I observed a small rabbit on a log in the water.” So, to get the log to the riverbed, I produced a puff of wind.
“How noble of you,” the Emperor said with a nod. Congratulations on coming in fifth place!
The sound of hooves approaching the finish line could be heard from afar. The snake slithered into 6th place before the horse, unwrapping himself from the horse’s hooves. The snake, like the mouse, was a perceptive creature. The sheep, monkey, and rooster were then transported on a raft. The three buddies had discovered a raft and worked as a team to pull it to shore. The dog was the second animal to come.
“Why, I thought you claimed to be the best swimmer in the world, my close friend. How did you end up in 9th place? As he shook his fur, the Jade Emperor inquired of the dog.
“Oh, the river water was so clean that I couldn’t resist taking a bath before the race! remarked the dog.
Last but not least, the pig showed up. He stopped to eat and take a nap since he was so hungry.
The Jade Emperor made a clapping motion with his hands “Congratulations to everybody who completed the race!
In the following order, you are now members of the zodiac: rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig.
All of the animals applauded. Except for the cat, who skulked away, muttering under his breath about the rat.
