October 7 falls on what planet?
Venus, the brightest planet, has been visible after sunset in the west for a few months. Antares in the constellation Scorpius the Scorpion, one of northern summer’s most treasured stars, is now close to Venus in the western dusk. And starting on or about October 7, 2021or, perhaps more realistically for observers in the Northern Hemisphere, October 8you will be able to see the young moon return to the evening sky as it passes by Venus over a number of evenings. On October 9 at around 19:00 UTC, their precise conjunction will occur. At that time, Venus and the moon will be positioned on the dome of the sky with the same right ascension (equivalent to terrestrial longitude). But don’t be concerned about that day or hour. On each of these evenings, keep an eye out for the moon and Venus. Take care to catch them right after sunset, though. They will swiftly descend below the western horizon with the sun.
All of these items are easily bright enough to resist the twilight glow in the evening. The narrow fall angle of the ecliptic will make it difficult for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere to see the moon, Venus, and Antares in October 2021. The sun travels along the ecliptic in our sky. Along it also move the moon and planets. The ecliptic is close to the horizon in the evening twilight sky as seen from northerly latitudes. So, to the side of the sunset point, the moon, Venus, and Antares will be clearly visible (to the left of the sunset point, as you stand facing west).
The season is inverted when viewed from the Southern Hemisphere. Now that spring has arrived in that hemisphere, the ecliptic forms a sharp angle with the horizon in the evening. On October 7, 8, 9, and 10, the moon and Venus will be magnificently visible from the Southern Hemisphere.
The moon will have become a fat crescent in the evening sky by around October 10. According to North American clocks, the first quarter moon will appear on October 12. (October 13 at 03:25 UTC). And on October 20th, there will be a full moon.
Continue keeping an eye out for Venus and Antares in the western skies. On October 16, they will experience their own conjunction (when they will be at their closest in right ascension). After that, Antares will disappear for another season beneath the brightness of the setting sun. But Venus will keep getting farther away from the sun (still moving mostly sideways, to the left of the sunset point, as seen from our northerly latitudes). On October 29, Venus will finally come to the end of its rope in relation to the sun. This phenomenon is known as Venus’s greatest elongation.
