Later in the poem, he characterizes Ophiuchus’ astrological impact as one that provides affinity with snakes and protection from poisons when the constellation is in its rising phase, saying “He makes snakes appear harmless to those who are born under his rule. They will receive snakes within the folds of their flowing robes, kiss these venomous monsters, and they will not be harmed “.. Because of the link between poisons and medicines, a later 4th century astrologer known as Anonymous of 379 equated “the bright star of Ophiuchus,” Ras Alhague (Ophiuchi), with doctors, healers, or physicians ().
Suggestions that there are “13 astrological signs” because “the Sun is in the sign of Ophiuchus” between November 30 and December 18 have been published since at least the 1970s, based on the 1930 IAU constellation limits.
Steven Schmidt proposed a 14-sign zodiac in his book Astrology 14 in 1970, adding Ophiuchus (December 6 to December 31) and Cetus (May 12 to June 6) as new signs.
The idea was followed up by Walter Berg in his book The 13 Signs of the Zodiac in 20th-century sidereal astrology (1995).
Parke Kunkle, an astronomer at the Minnesota Planetarium Society, repeated the idea of “the 13th zodiac sign Ophiuchus” in a remark in January 2011, which made headlines in the popular press.

Although decans or decanates are no longer used, each sign can be divided into three ten-sector segments known as decans or decanates. In 2012, the General Social Survey indicated that 34% of Americans think astrology is “extremely” or “kind of scientific,” with the percentage of individuals who think astrology is “not at all scientific” dropping from two-thirds to about half.
Astrology is the concept that astronomical phenomena, such as the stars over your head when you were born or the fact that Mercury is retrograde, have the potential to influence our daily lives and personality traits. Of course, this is distinct from astronomy, which is the scientific study of celestial objects, space, and the physics of the cosmos.
A particular facet of astrology, the foretelling of a person’s future or the provision of daily counsel via horoscopes, is gaining in popularity. The Cut, for example, recorded a 150 percent rise in horoscope page views in 2017 compared to 2016.
Clearly, a lot of people are trying to figure out how to read the stars for guidance. Understanding the positions of the stars is the foundation of astrology, which appears to be a scientific discipline in and of itself. On these July nights, you can glimpse Ophiuchus the Serpent Bearer. The stars are faint, so you’ll need a dark sky to see them. From the Northern Hemisphere, look for Ophiuchus in the south at nightfall. Around mid-evening, look more overhead from the Southern Hemisphere.
Antares, a brilliant red star in the constellation Scorpius the Scorpion, can aid in the search for Ophiuchus. Ophiuchus can be seen a short distance north of Antares.
The brightest star in Ophiuchus is Rasalhague, a 2nd-magnitude star that highlights Ophiuchus’ head. In the Ophiuchus chart below, look for Rasalhague. Rasalhague, on the other hand, isn’t nearly as bright as Antares.
